Advantages: Contains natural ingredients, heals existing blemishes and prevents new ones forming.
Disadvantages: The price and the amount that you get
Despite being 27, my skin still shows traits of a typical teenager's complexion being oily, with enlarged pores and the frequently dotted with the appearance of blemishes. The Dermalogica MediBac Overnight Clearing Gel is a product that has been specifically designed for adults who have skin like mine that just refuses to grow up.
What does it do?
The product is designed to clear the skin of dead skin cells and spot causing impurities. It promises to purify the skin so that new blemishes and blackhead can't form, while speeding up the healing process of blemishes that you may already have. The treatment is designed to get to work while you sleep, soothing the skin and inhibiting spot causing factors such as excess oils and bacteria.
How does it work?
The product contains Salicylic Acid which is an ingredient commonly found in acne treatments. The substance is gentle, despite what its name suggests and it is extracted from the Willow tree. It acts as a chemical exfoliant and removes the dead skin cells from the surface of face, preventing them from clogging the pores and forming blemishes. In doing so, it prevents the pores from becoming enlarged further and allows the skin to breathe.
Rosemary is present because of its antibacterial qualities which prevent spot causing bacteria from lurking on the skin. It has a rejuvenating effect on the skin and as it contains antioxidants, it prevents the skin from aging prematurely aging. Spiraea extract helps to encourage the skins own defence system to work at its optimum level and acts as an anti inflammatory on the skin.
Also included is Zinc which has a toning effect on the skin, making the pores smaller so that less oil will creep out. It helps to heal blemishes that you may already have and regulates the sebum glands activity. A Zinc deficiency is often the cause of acne and the substance can work wonders at clearing the skin. Citronella has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities and so prevents blemishes from occurring.
Lavender helps to heal spots that are already present while stimulating the growth of healthy new skin cells. It is incredibly soothing on the skin, calms redness and balances the skin's production of oil.
Horse Chestnut is present to increase the bloods circulation meaning plenty of oxygen reaches your skin cells. It strengthens the skin and plumps up the skin cells, meaning your face will look more toned and more youthful.
Tea Tree Oil is another substance which is frequently found in acne treatments and it is included here to heal blemishes and to soothe any irritations. Sage is included to tighten the pores and to kill any bacterial that is lurking on the skin. Orange is also present for this purpose and the fruit extract also helps to brighten the skin.
Panthenol is also swirled into the mixture which is a form of Vitamin B5. It moisturises and plumps up the skin while dealing with any inflammation or irritation. It leaves the skin feeling smoother and looking refreshed and rejuvenated.
How do you use the product?
I apply a small layer of this product to my face just before I climb into bed. It needs to be used on clean and dry skin. In the morning the product can be washed away with your usual cleanser. I also use this product when I'm having a quiet day in, after a night out with the girls. Usually, I will have forgotten to remove my make up properly the night before and I use this product to help with damage limitation!
I only use the product on the areas of my face where spots form and avoid any areas where my skin gets dry. In my case, that means smoothing it everywhere other than my forehead. I also sometimes just use it as targeted relief on the more obvious blemishes to make the bottle last longer!
Packaging and Price
The product comes in a plain white bottle that is typical of Dermalogica's packaging. The brand doesn't believe in fancy packaging or advertising as they believe that their creations can speak for themselves. The bottle has Dermalogica written down the side and it has a grey screw top lid. The top of the bottle is formed into a point in order to make the solution easy to dispense.
The product isn't cheap and will cost you around £29 for 50ml of the liquid. It can be bought from your nearest Dermalogica store and also from many online websites. The price will vary slightly so it's worth taking the time to shop around.
My thoughts
Despite this product being a pricey one, you are paying for the quality and not the label. It is embarrassing for a teenager to have bad skin but it moves onto a whole new level when this continues into adulthood. In addition, the amount you use of this product each time is so small, that the bottle should last you a very long time.
The product contains a whole host of natural ingredients and the solution has no unnecessary harsh ingredients. Nor has it any artificial fragrances or colouring so this product will be fine on sensitive skin. It has never given me any feelings of discomfort or irritation which is good considering the amount of time that it is left on your skin.
The reason that this product is an overnight treatment is that you would look a bit silly wearing it in the daytime. As the product dries and you toss and turn in bed, the solution gets flaky and some of it peels off. It would look awful in the day time or underneath make up, especially as it can get sticky at times. But like I said earlier, if you're not planning on going anywhere, you can wear it at home in the day time.
The product can be a bit drying on the skin and after a while it made the dry areas of my skin, even dryer so now I only use it on the oily areas. Due to the price, it's not something I use religiously but it's great for putting on blemishes. I use it overnight when I need to ensure that my skin looks good the next day and this product is very reassuring as I know I won't wake up to find any nasty suprises on my face.
When used on targeted areas, the spots that I have, heal a lot faster and the product helps to calm the inflammation and the redness. My friend has also used this product and although she didn't notice any massive improvements, one thing we both agreed on was that it certainly doesn't do any harm. My skin is always in a better condition after using this and it is a lot clearer too.
The aroma is relaxing with a fresh herbal fragrance which is quite comforting as you're dropping off to sleep. The product is easily removed the next day using a normal cleanser. My skin feels much cleaner, less oily and remains shine free for longer the next day.
All in all, this is a great preventative and healing treatment for adult skin which is still suffering from teenage symptoms. The natural ingredients really help to dry up any existing blemishes while preventing the appearance of new ones. My skin seems clearer and brighter after use and although it has a hefty price tag, if your skin is affecting your happiness, then in my opinion this little product is worth a shot.
