Advantages: Quick and effective. Can be slotted into any skincare routine and for any skin type.
Disadvantages: Quite pricey.
Hydration is needed by all skins, regardless of whether you have oily or dry skin. The common misconception is that if you have oily skin then your skin cannot be dehydrated, however, that is false and if anything because of some of the ingredients that those with oily skin types use on their face to combat oil can actually have a negative effect on it's overall hydration. I would recommend drinking 2ltrs of water every day, hydrating your skin after exercise and hot baths/showers and using an hydrating serum/oil of sorts.
This version of a hydrating serum from Dermalogica is great because it's so light, so even those who hate heavy skincare products on their face will enjoy using this.
*How do you know if your skin is dehydrated ? *
On the face, dehydration can appear in a few forms. If you pinch your skin and the rebound of that skin is not instant, then that is a sign of dehydration ( this can work on any skin anywhere on the body and the slower the rebound the more dehydrated your skin is. ) Also, if your 'pores' seem to look wide and form in lines across the face and for those aging skins, temporary lines appear and disappear on a daily basis, they are also signs of dehydration on the skin. Thus, even though your skin could be prone to 'temporary' lines ( these differ to permanent aging lines that appear for different reasons ) through dehydration, these types of temporary lines can become permanent lines over time so that's something that you may want to nip in the bud.
*Why it works *
The key ingredient in the Dermalogica skin hydrating serum is a form of Hyaluronic Acid. This is able to hold up to one thousand times its weight in water for hydration and improved elasticity.
However, it also contains Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract which has a mildly astringent effect and Lavandula Angustifolia Oil which helps with skin irritations, thus making it suitable for even those with oilier skin types.
Therefore a mix of hydrating ingredients and skin calming ingredients makes this a great serum for all skin types. I would recommend that you don't use this alone however, even for those with oilier skin types as it's there to hydrate and not moisturise. They are two different actions and the skin benefits from both forms of actions and skin care !! Therefore, I would recommend that oilier skin types need to choose a moituriser suitable for their skin type if they are tempted to go without.
*How to use*
Squeeze a small dose onto fingertips. Massage gently over cleansed face and throat. Can also be mixed with your Dermalogica moisturiser and then applied to face. If you like to use oils in your skincare routine, this serum will be added prior to any oils and moisturisers. However, if you use an SPF cream with the likes of Avobenzone and/or Oxybenzone in it, then you will need to add THAT SPF cream FIRST as that contains a chemical sunblock that needs to react with your skin cells. Once dried ( at least 10 minutes if possible ) then add your serum etc afterwards.
*Ingredients*
Melissa Officinalis Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Glycerin, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Panthenol, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Glycolipids, Hydrolyzed Algin, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, Sea Water, PPG-5-Ceteth-20, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben.
Summary: If your skin needs an extra hydration boost then this light serum may do the trick.
