      Alpro product to avoid.

I seem to be going through a lot of Alpro products lately, my latest one being the Alpro Caramel flavoured dessert. I stumbled across this in Tesco for £1.38, which is a shame since I could have got this for £1 if I purchased it when it slashed it price. It's still available for £1 until 27/07/2010, but I would seriously opt for another dessert as this was not to my liking at all.

This is a caramel dessert made up of soya beans and water with added calcium and vitamins. Like the other Alpro desserts this too is a long life product which can sometimes be found in special diet section in supermarkets and health food shops but in Tesco this was hidden away with the other dessert pots, such as Ambrosia rice. I don't think that this caramel flavour is as available or popular compared to the other flavours in Alpro dessert range. You get 4 x 125g caramel coloured pots in a sliding cardboard cover as packaging.

Unlike the other Alpro desserts this one seems to have a skin of the caramel dessert formed on the rim of the pot which I find a bit yucky and unavoidable as it came off into my creamy desert. The dessert is a sort of caramel brown in colour and creamy, thick, smooth in texture. It smells like Caramel. Taste wise it has a strong caramel flavour, it's sweet at the start and leaves a slight bitterness afterwards. It made me feel kind of sick eating this. I don't like this, it's bearable but to be honestly I prefer the other flavours and this is not a product I would ever purchase again. I do love my Caramel but this combination of a dessert just does not do it for me.

Ingredients include: Water , Sugar , Hulled Soya Beans (6%) , Thickeners (Modified Tapioca Starch, Carrageenan) , Caramel Sauce (1%) , Caramelized Raw Cane Sugar , Tri-Calcium Phosphate , Sea Salt , Flavouring , Natural Flavouring , Vitamins (Riboflavin, B12, D2) .

About 100g of this product provides you with 82 Kcal and 348 KJ of energy. According to the Food Standard Agency traffic light system this product is low in fat, saturated fat and salt but medium in sugar.
This product is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. This product is free from gluten, wheat, lactose and dairy. Also it free from artificial Colours, sweeteners and preservatives.

Overall, not a pleasant eating experience. I did go through the 4 pots with great difficulty, thinking it's one of those things that your taste buds have to get use to and maybe end up liking it later. Sadly this was not the case. It's a sickly dessert I'm glad to see the back of.
