~ What is it? ~
Ambrosia Devon Custard is a delicious ready made custard that is available in pots, tins or cartons. It has a delicious taste and the perfect yellow custard colour.
It is availble in low fat and the normal. You can tell them apart by their packaging, the low fat has a lighter green shade on the bottom of the label and the normal is coloured in a darker green.
~ Is it any good? ~
Yes, this is the only custard I will eat, I really like the creamy taste, the sweetness is just right and the colour is how custard should be. I only buy the original version rather than the low fat as if I am eating custard, there is a high probability that I will be eating cake too, so any calorie counting/low fat diet goes straight out of the window!

~ Why I like it ~
I love cake and custard, it is my treat that I will have once a month and that is probably the reason I don't scrimp on low fat this and that! I have in the past bought and tried different custards but none of them ever compare, they just don't ever have the same creamy consistancy, the lack the 'custard' yellow colour and the taste is never just right. Whereby Ambrosia have got full marks on the lot. The taste is sweet yet not too sweet so you can have a sticky toffee pudding or jam roly poly without it being sickly .... Yum!
This has to my all time favourite comfort food and I also really love it with bananas!

Firstly, i never buy custard in cartons, not even Ambrosia; many years ago, i purchased a carton of custard and it was basically rotten (sorry, didnt mean to put you off!) as Ambrosia Devon custard really is of a very good quality and taste. It has a buttery creamy taste and a nice texture. It is not too thck and definately not too thin. I have tried some other cheaper brand custards, and whilst most are good, the taste and quality just doesnt match up to Ambrosia. Value custards are definately a no no in my book; they are watery and tasteless and not worth buying even though they are very cheap.
I like the Ambrosia label itself on the tin. There is a picture on the front of a farm with Ambrosia Devon custard written underneath stating that the custard has been made in Devon for over 90 years. The particular can i have in my cupboard at the moment has a recommendation for a way to make an icecream with the custard. It suggests mixing the custard with lemon curd and then freezing it. I must say I havn't tried this so can't comment on what it may taste like, but if you like lemon curd it might be worth giving it a go!
The other bonus about canned Ambrosia custard is that it provides calcium, essential for healthy bones and teeth, it has no artificial flavours or colouring and no preservative. It does contain carbohydrates, sugar, fat and salt however. This custard is a bit fattening with a third of a can containing 143 kcal. You can get low fat Ambrosia Devon Custard but the calorie difference is very little so i stick to this one. This custard can be eaten hot or cold and its microwavable. On the can, contact details are also printed regarding anyone who wishes to make comments on the product and the number provided is an 0800 so no costs there.
Ambrosia Devon custard comes in cans, cartons and small pots. Each can has 425g contents .I don't think the pots are very good value for money though; they are good for children re the size (150g) but you'll lose money buying these. You can get large cartons containing 1kg of the product, reasonably priced at £1.00, but i always stick to the cans and i am not sure of the shelf life of a carton . In other words, would you consume all of that custard in a couple of days?
At the moment you can buy 3 cans for only £1.49 in Tesco which i think is a great bargain. You'll only need one tin for a family of 3 or 4 so at less than £0.50pence per can thats great value, especialy for a super tasting custard like this one.
Custard can be eaten in many ways with many different puddings. I like it cold with apple pie/crumble and cold with sponge cakes (i love it this way; i mash up the sponge into the custard!). Some people of course prefer their custard hot. Its also lovely on its own.

Ambrosia is a well known custard brand. It advertises on this tin that they have been making their products in devon for over 90 years!
I have always bought ambrosia custard, after trying cheaper brands to try and reduce the shopping bill, this is one product that i will not be replacing with a cheaper brand!
This custard is expensive in my opinion, but it is worth paying that bit extra for a good quality, and nice tasting product. It costs roughly 75p for a 425g can in most supermarkets, which i think is overpriced! However, tescos are doing an offer on these at the moment, 2 cans for £1. I think 50p a can is more reasonable! I have stocked up on these this week!
You can buy this custard in a pack of three, which costs roughly £1.99. So it doesnt really save much if you buy them seperatley, unless they are on offer!
This custard also comes in cartons, i personally prefer to just buy tins, as i always make a mess when i try and cut the cartons open.
These cans dont have a ring pull on them you have to get a tin opener out to open them, this is my only complaint with them! As they are so expensive per can, they could at least put a ring pull on them to make them easier to open!
This custard can be found in all supermarkets, and is down the desert aisle with all the jelly etc.
The custard it self when you open the tin, is very thick, and is yellow in colour. To me it doesnt look very appealing like this! I cannot eat this cold, i cant stand it! I have to heat mine up, and when it is heated up it goes more creamier and smooth. It is not thick, but not too thin either.
To heat this custard, you just put it in a microwavable container and heat on full power for 2 and a half minutes. If you want to eat this cold, it is ready to serve straight from the tin.

This ambrosia custard cannot be beaten on taste! It tastes very creamy and is delicious on apple crumbles, sponges, sticky toffee pudding etc.
This custard contains 143 calories per serving, which is not that good for you! However they do a low fat version, but as i have not tried this i cant say if it tastes different or anything!
This product is free from artificial colours, flavourings and preservatives. It needs to be stored in a cool dry place, but once you open it, pour the contents into an airtight container and refrigerate.
I would deffinately recommend this brand of custard over cheaper brands, it is absolutely gorgeous!
I am a big baker and my children love to help me out. When I have cooked apple pie I like to eat mine with custard and I must admit that I am useless at making my own my trifles prove that. This is why I buy tinned custard. I have tried cheap brands but they are not as nice as Ambrosia.
This custard is widely available in many supermarkets and I have noticed lately that my local shop supplies it which is good when I need some quickly to give my children. I like to eat mine cold too and can not resist having a spoonful when I am pouring it over the cakes and pies.
This is quite high is calories so should definitely be eaten in moderation. They have been making this in Devon for over 90 years. I like British produce and always support British companies when I am buying my food. Custard is a good source of calcium due to being made from milk so this is a good thing when it comes to my children due to I know it is giving them what they need to grow and be healthy. There are no artificial colours or flavourings in this and there are no preservatives either.
There is instructions on how to heat the product by pan or in the microwave this is also able to be eaten cold. You can also get this is small snack pots which you are able to put in children's lunch boxes which I think is a brilliant idea if they will not eat yoghurts.
The ingredients in this are skimmed milk, buttermilk, sugar, modified starch, vegetable oil, whey, flavouring, colours (curcumin, annatto). It is 73% of milk which I think is excellent. This is not suitable for dairy intolerance unfortunately.
They have a contact phone number and web page for any questions or queries that you may have and give a good personal friendly note asking you to let them know if you are not happy with the product. There is also a guidance paragraph about how to store the product and to shake it well before opening.
I love the taste of this it is very thick and easy to pour over your puddings. I like to eat it cold on its own and find it easy to warm when adding it to a pudding. You are able to store this once opened for 3 days, due to having a big family a tin is opened and used in a day in our house. This is a 425g jar and does stretch a long way. I like the fact that it is healthy and full of goodness even though it is high in calories. This is 53p in asda and I think this is a good price for this. It is very creamy and sweet and complements a pudding. My children like to eat this on its own and it makes a quick pudding without cake. I would highly recommend this to pudding lovers as part of a calcium intake.
The last time i tried custard was when i was about 7 years old and it was totaly different. You use to get it in a packet and you had to add milk and boil it on the hob. I dont know if it was just my mum but we always seemed to end up with lumps and burnt bits in it. For this reason i have stayed away from custard.
The other day whilst relaxing i had a fancy for bananas and custard. My partner being a big fan for apple crumble and custard always makes sure that there is a few tins in the house at all times. So i thought lets try some, i can always give it to him if i donnt like it.
The tin is green and blue with a nice country side picture on it and Ambrosia devon custard writen on it. It dosent have the handy pull to open it so i had to get out the old trusty tin opener. Inside you get a very yellow thick and smooth custard. But it dose state that it does not contain artifical flavours or colours.
Having not made custard for some time if ever (my mum always use to do it as i was to young) i had to read the instructons. Basically you pour it into a microwaveable container and heat on full power for 2 1/2 mins, stirring halfway through and again after heating. and that is it. serve. How easy is that.
Well after chopping some bananas and pouring the custard over the wtop of them i began hesitantly to eat. And WOW. it tasted so good, so creamy and custardy. after not eating it for some time i had forgotten how good it was. (even with the lumps in my mums) I have defenatly been introduced back to custard and ambrosia is my new god of the munchys.
The Original Custard and the best. I don't mind cheaper Custard, but it isn't quite as tasty, milky or thick as this one. Although this is the most expensive 1 out there it is the best and probably worth spending that bit more on this.
I got this in a small pot, but think the larger tin costs about 80p thesedays. The small pots are found at the dessert aisles and cost about 40p each.
The little tub was just right for a small snack to eat, although I could probably eat quite a few of these.
I don't think the packaging is very eye catching for this, just a boring green colour. You just take the foil lid of this, and eat it out the pot with a spoon. quick and easy.
You can eat this hot or cold and I mostly like it cold, but a hot Custard in the cold months is also good. It isn't quite as thick when it is hot, so I prefer it when it is cold and thick.
There is quite a few calories in this, and think there is about 150 calories in this little 125g pot. a nice quick snack though that should satisfy your sweet tooth, and less calories than a Chocolate Bar.
The reason I like this so much is that it is thick, quite a light yellow colour and tastes like it is made of good quality ingredients. You can taste the Milkiness in here.
This is very tasty, and you can taste the Milk through this. It tastes good quality and not cheap and therefore it is my favourite Custard.
This custard is the Rolls Royce of dairy based desserts. If someone asked me to name the best ever custard, the definitive custard, the cream of the crop, ('scuse the pun) I would name Ambrosia without hesitation.
A quick glance at the ingredients section on the back of the tin will show that there are lots of things not to be found in the food - no artificial colours, no preservatives, low fat, free from gluten etc. Considering there are many things absent, the taste and quality are full on and not short of punch.
The custard is sweet enough to be tasty but not sickeningly so, and the consistency is just right which makes it ideal for either having on its own or for mixing with bananas, using as a filling in a trifle and is just as good either eaten hot or cold.
The best custard you can buy.
In my last review I mentioned that up until recently I had never been much of a sponge pudding fan, its usual accompaniment - Custard - however is something that I have always enjoyed and when I had my Sticky Toffee Pudding the only thing I could have to go with it was Ambrosia Custard.
Making a concerted effort to save calories and fat where I could I decided to go for the "Low Fat" variety rather than the standard can pictured above. Appearance wise, there is no real difference to the tin itself, mine is similar to the can pictured above but appears to be lighter in colour than the one shown, maybe an indicator that its contents are "lighter" than the standard variety.
Custard is a tricky thing to get right if cooking from scratch and I remember my mother slaving over a pan adding just the right amount of milk, egg yolks and other ingredients ensuring that she didn't boil or ruin the concoction. Nowadays I wouldn't dream of going to all that trouble so prefer to buy mine readymade in a tin, tastewise I have never noticed a difference, and to be honest I actually prefer the tinned variety to the home cooked one - sorry mum!

A light yellow/cream colour it is a flat, matt liquid that can be eaten hot or cold.
As the last time I had any custard it was with a hot pudding I decided to warm through my custard to go with it and this can be achieved either by slowly heating through on the hob or by putting it into the microwave.
To me the taste is the same whichever way it is prepared, so I heated mine in the microwave for the recommended two and half minutes and was then ready to serve.
When heated through there is a gentle creamy aroma that is evident and the custard retains its thick consistency, pouring over my pudding it added a much-needed liquid element that prevented my sponge pudding from being too dry. Taste wise it is as it should be; creamy, light and slightly sweet and doesn't detract from the other flavours it is covering.
Nutrition wise, a third of a 425 gram can will provide you with 130 calories, 16.8 grams of sugar and 1.4 grams of saturated fat, presumably these will be higher if you go for the regular variety rather than the low fat one that I chose.
Ingredients reveal that the total milk content is at least 74% and this is pointed out in the allergen information as well although presumably you would already know that this isn't a product for you if you are lactose intolerant.
Overall, Ambrosia Custard is a creamy, tasty way to add an extra something to your desserts, and can be eaten alone if you prefer. Being another tinned item it will have a long shelf life and is something that seems to be a staple item in my cupboards for when it is needed. Normally retailing for around 75p for a 425 gram can and is found in all of the major supermarkets.
From me it rates a perfect 5/5 Dooyoo stars, I can't find a single fault with it and it is a favourite of mine.

Each 400g tin is of course recyclable as well as the paper cover with the print, nutrition and ingredient details on it. The tin is not a ring pull, nut no bother let's just get the old tin opener out, and away we go!!! It is actually available in a plastic pots in small servings probably useful for a quick snack or just if you would like a small portion.
The colour and consistency, well it is a very yellow colour but nothing out of the ordinary and just a normal custardy colour. In consistency it is thick but not overly gloopy and pours out of the tin like a dream.
Skimmed Milk, Buttermilk, Sugar, Modified Starch, Vegetable Oil, Whey, Flavouring, Colours (Curcumin, Annatto). Total Milk Content 73%.

As you can see it is not too bad and not particularly high in fat, well healthy and delicious, what an amazing concept!!
There are also no artificial colours and flavours which is a relief. It is also suitable for vegetarians but of course not vegans.
To prepare, of course you can simmer and keep stirring under a low heat or simply microwave either alone or as part of your dessert. It can be enjoyed cold apparently but I would much prefer to get it hotted up especially for these winter months!!
I do not know how they make this so creamy, it really is a very creamy tasting custard, more so than any other custards that you have ever had before!! It makes a gorgeous addition to any pudding, for instance a bit of swiss roll, apple pie, bakewell tart, anything cakey. It is very smooth and lovely tasting, a real treat, but without loads of fat, a miracle I tell you!!
A tin will easily split between 3 or 4 people when served with a dessert, the Ambrosia brand is more expensive of course than some other makes but you really can tell the difference between Ambrosia and a cheaper brand.
I have seen it in discount stores and supermarkets so is widely available.

Ambrosia Devon custard is the best out there in my eyes, perfect for any deserts or puddings you may wish to add custard to, this is nothing like the school custard of old this will not disappoint
Each tin has a tin label which makes gives you an idea or where the custard comes from having a green field and a blue sky. This has the logo surrounded in the custard. Once you open the tin you will find a creamy looking custard which is smooth beyond belief, you will be far fetched to see any lumps and the colour is as perfect as you could imagine custard to be.
One tin retails for around £0.74p for a 425 gram tin or you can get larger cartons of the custard too
About the Taste?
This is really creamy and a bit thick in consistency but not overly thick, It tastes smooth and creamy with a little hint of sugar in the background, this really is the king of custard I think
Not too bad for you as I suppose it is based on milk as the main ingredient as appose to sugar, fat and salt are green on the traffic lights and sat fat and sugar are amber which is not too bad really. 102kcal per 100 grams

I am a massive fan of custard, preferably eaten hot (unless it is in a pastry and then cold is delicious!) and have tried quite a few different brands. Unfortunately, Ambrosia does tend to be the most expensive one, but the reason for that is that it is so, so much better than the competitors!
Unfortunately, the 400g tin doesn't have a pull off top so you will need a tin opener to get it open. It has a green and blue label with the logo on the front and a picture of some green, lush looking fields. The brand name is written across the front.
A 400g tin will cost around £1, though can sometimes be found on offer. You can also buy this in ready to pour cartons and small, yogurt style pots.
To heat up, either warm gently in a saucepan or pop into the microwave for around 2 minutes, stirring half way through - check carefully as times are likely to vary and you don't want to overheat this product.
There are literally hundreds of ways to eat this custard! On its own, over cake, or pie, or tarts. In fact, there really is too many choices to mention, I am sure that you will have your own personal favourite. Mine is definitely over chocolate cake - yum!
This custard is a pale yellow colour and looks very natural. It is very thick and has a delicious creamy texture, that is sweet without being too sweet or sickly. It really is the perfect custard and tastes mouth wateringly luxurious.
I highly recommend this custard, yes it costs more but oh it is so worth it! Pay the extra, treat yourself and savour every delicious mouthful, this really is the cream of the crop!

I love custard with everything, so I buy this frequently. I haven't tried a great deal of other brands of custard, but this is gorgeous so I wouldn't need to replace it... I'm doubting that anything else CAN!
The custard is simply put into a tin can, with a paper wrapper around detailing what it is etc. It has a simple opener at the top with which you need to use a can opener to open, but once you open, it is simply custard, custard, custard!
I personally find that it's a little messy, due to custard being fluid, and just mucks up your can opener. They should have the easy to open lid, where you just have to pull it back! That would make life so much easier.

Upon opening the tin, a golden creamy liquid oozes and that is what we call custard. It looks absolutely fantastic, a smooth wholesome (not totally fluid) texture, that is premium and of high quality.

I personally love this with rich triple chocolate cake, as it makes it more soft and smooth due to the cake's dryness. It adds a hint of dairy, and makes the overall thing less sickeningly sweet.
I have had this with ice cream, fruit, jelly, all tasting fab, due to its amazing complimentary quality. I think custard has to be desserts' best friend, as it can go with almost ANYTHING.
Around £1 at any supermarket.
I would recommend this to EVERYONE, as it is so good. I have only ever tried powdered custard other than this, and that is sickly, so this is what I'd recommend! You NEED this in your house as a pivotal necessity in the kitchen; in the event that you have a piece of dry cake, or something that needs a little bit EXTRA taste of sweetness.
I love this and eat this with almost everything, and you can too!
Please be assured that this custard is more than fantastic. It is in a class of its own and can even be compared with some of the better home-made custards.
There is no-need to go and spend lots of money on theserefrigerated store bought custards if you are going to be having the custard for a special occasion.
This custard is sweet and of an excellent consistency. However this custard is not too sweet and it is not too thick. what I am trying to say is that it is just rght.
If you want to put it on a cake or a crumble, it tastes brilliant. If you want to have it on its own it tates excellent. Or if you wish then you can use it as part of a desert like trifle.
It will not let you down and it is so much easier then making it yourself.
When it comes to custard, for me it's a no brainer and I always go straight for the 'Amrbosia custard', I eat it plane or on hot puddings, crumbles and pies and I don't mind anyway as long as it is only this make!

Yes, there is a range of Ambrosia dessert custard, you can get it in the tin, the bigger carton, little pots, some with strawberry jam, little crumble pots with custard next to it- the list goes on!
It costs around 50p, costing up to £1 depending where you get it from, I normally buy from Asda or Tescos where it is normally about 50p, but sometimes I pop into independent news agents and there prices can go from a £1 upwards!!
I love it! To me there is nothing better and there is no other option.
When you first open the tin you are met by this 'thick' gloopy substance, which you sort of have to spoon out to get it all in the bowl. Within 5 or som minutes, it will start to be a lot 'thinner', yet stilly creamy and should be piping hot!
I love to have it on hot puddings, crumbles or pies, but sometimes I just eat alone, but once you first taste it, there is nothing else that tastes remotley like it or has the same flavour. It is still quite thick and creamy and has none of them horrible lumps in it which makes it a nice texture in your mouth. I can sort of taste vanilla very faintly, but can honestly not describe the taste!
It also smell lovely and creamy, it just reminds me of christmas and winter from the minute you put it on the stove!
It is a well known make and once you taste this you'll know why- I honestly think that it is one, if not the best custard.
Overall I'd reccomend this if you want a lovely, warm, creamy, filling treat that is lump free and has a lovely velvety soft texture! Sounds tempting, right? Also per 125g it is only 130 kcal which I think is quite good, for a once in a while treat!

Ambrosia Devon custard has to be the best pre-made custard available to buy, its so thick, so creamy and so rich in taste that its just the perfect custard for any occasion, eaten cold, or warm it still tastes great and you cant beat this stuff.
The custard itself comes in tins, however iv also seen this in kind of milk carton packets as well. I do usually buy in cans though it has to be said. The cans are usually about 70p sometimes less, sometimes more when bought alone however I usually buy these at my freezer shops and they do them at two for a pound so 50p a tin isn't bad at all.
The custard tastes really great. Its really thick, and no matter how little water you add to your packet custard, you just cant quite get it to the right consistency as ambrosia manage. It tastes really creamy as well which I really like. It does kind of have its own unique custard flavour with this rich creamy taste as I havent had any other custards that taste like this one.
