Asda's Smartprice Strawberry Jelly
Advantages: Cheap and cheerful.
Disadvantages: I can't taste anything!
I am always on the lookout for a bargain, this the same for food products, I know there are many things that can't be scrimped on, but I am willing to try the cheaper brands at least once to determine if there is any savings to be had.
My son has just discovered the delights that is jelly, so on a recent shopping trip I saw a bargain to be had.
The product I will now review is - "Smartprice strawberry jelly"
Now I do normally have to sample the things that I end up either cooking or making, this is no hardship when it comes to puddings!
I have never liked crystal jellies, these being the ones that come in powder form, these always have a saccharin taste to them in my opinion, so when I saw this jelly I was pleased to see that this particular jelly was sold in a concentrated jelly block, the ones from my childhood, I even remember eating a "raw" cube a day to help my nails!
The packaging is quite basic, but for the price I paid I was impressed that they could actually afford to wrap it at all!
The jelly is wrapped in a sealed plastic pouch. There is all the relevant information on the front, brand name, product name, weight and some food facts. As with the majority of Asda products, basic range or otherwise, all products boast the fact that they contain no artificial colours or preservatives.
The making up instructions are simple, tear the jelly block into pieces, easy to do as the jelly is almost perforated thus ensuring equal sized pieces, put into a heat resistant dish or bowl, mine always goes into a plastic measuring jug. Pour on ½ pint of boiling water from the kettle. Leave to dissolve then top upto a pint with cold water.
You then decant into a bowl or mould then leave to set. You can put it into a fridge to speed things along but in fairness that is not really necessary as the jelly will set eventually.
I mention this only for the reason that some people don't like putting warm things into a fridge as it can bring the temperature down, this in turn can help bacteria grow rapidly and contaminate other food products, I usually leave to go cold, then chill in my fridge.
The jelly (once set), set to a nice wobble, this of course also depends on whether you have added the right amount of water. Too little and the jelly will be too hard, too much and the jelly won't set sufficiently.
The jelly is nice and smooth, unlike some of the powdered varieties. There is however very little in the way of taste. The colour tries to deceive you into thinking that this will taste fruitier than it actually does.
To me the jelly has no taste at all, but I have to concede to the fact that my taste buds are probably shot through years of smoking. My son however, whose opinion I should really listen to, especially as I buy it specifically for him, loves it.
I will continue to buy this for him as I don't mind him eating loads when it costs as little as it does!
The nutritional information is as follows -
Per 1/3 of the jelly,
12.5g of which sugars
The cost, as I mentioned earlier, was the main draw for me, believe it or not this has just gone down in price from 9p, to 7p, this to me is unbeatable value!
