Advantages: Its 7p!
Disadvantages: Not an overly juicy taste!
I'm not a big Jelly fan usually, but me and my flatmates at uni were throwing a kids style flat party. Making fairy cakes, putting out a few nibbles for our friends, party hats, party poppers, punch, aswell as lots of alcohol and of course Vodka Jelly!
On a tight student budget we weren't really looking for any top named brands, after all we would probably be all to drunk to notice how good something tasted anyway! So, four of us went to our local Asda and were on the jelly aisle. If it had been my choice I wanted to buy the rowntrees jelly, only 35p or so per pot but then my flatmate said "noo lets just get this 7p smartprice jelly". So I thought to myself, this jelly is just going to taste like pure vodka and I won't be eating any of it, but I decided the party wasn't all about what I wanted (even if it was my birthday) so I just went along with it and thought some hungry student would get on it!
So anyway, we got back to the flat and made the jelly. It was meant to be a group effort but it is that easy to make its difficult to get everyone involved so we all just had one lucky stir where we made a wish! The instructions were simple! Telling you to you break up the perforated blocks of jelly into a heat resistant dish or bowl and then add ½ pint of boiling water alongside ½ a pint of cold water. Obviously, it being vodka jelly we ignored the cold water and added half a pint of vodka! It stunk of vodka before it set and I thought there's no way that that is going to even set nevermind taste like strawberry! Then you add to a bowl, or mould and put it in the fridge (obviously when it has cooled down because it can otherwise mess with your fridge settings I believe)...
So, once the jelly had set, which unbelievably looked like it hadn't as it wobbled so much (yeah I don't eat jelly often) so we put it out for with the party nibbles hoping that it would go down well. Everyone took a bowl at the same time and although it wasnt deliciously fruity (as it looked) seen as though it had half a pint of vodka in it I was quite impressed that there was still a taste of strawberry and wasn't completely overpowered by the vodka! Obviously it wasnt the best but worth the 7p we paid for it! I never knew jelly could be so cheap! Definitely recommend, especially for any vodka fuelled student parties for people who fancy getting drunk off jelly instead of just drinking the alcohol :]
Also, it is handy to know that the jelly is not exactly calorific as the packet tells you the nutritional information which is...
Per 1/3 of the jelly,
12.5g of which sugars
So it not going to be too difficult to burn off a bit of jelly in the gym!
Summary: Screw the rowntrees brand, smartprice are just as good, if not better!
