      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Not fantastic but not one to avoid either!

On a Sunday we usually have a roast dinner that my Mother lovingly prepares and cooks and for a woman that is simply a rubbish cook for some reason she does a fabulous Sunday roast dinner thank goodness! Usually an hour after eating her culinary delight we will indulge in some sort of pudding and a firm favourite of all of ours is some sort of trifle.

My Mum picked this up last week for 98p and was well chuffed with it. Me, I was concerned with it being a value/economy product and so cheap for the size of it (feeds 4 people generous portions) and almost decided not to try it at all lol.

      The Packaging:

The trifle comes in a clear plastic round tub with a pull off plastic cover to the top of it. Over that you get a green and white cardboard sleeve that slides on/off with ease. On the top of that there is a photograph of the trifle and I'm told in black green and white writing that it is Asda 'Smart Price' Fruit Cocktail Trifle and that it is 425g in weight, contains no artificial colours, flavours, hydrogenated fat or preservatives, is suitable for Vegetarians and I'm also told to keep it refrigerated and the best before date is clearly displayed on there too. On the back of the sleeve ingredients and allergy advice is listed (Contains: Gluten, milk, wheat and egg and may contain traces of nuts and/or seeds), a full nutritional chart is listed and of course contact details for Asda are given as per usual. It all looks very economy packaging but it all serves it's purpose and there is not loads of it but it's informative enough!

      The Trifle:

Lets start from the bottom up shall we cos I don't know where to start!

You get a generous portion of what to me looks like tinned fruit cocktail. Generous and colourful amount of it though in a little natural juice and I spotted green grapes, pineapple chunks, peach and pear slices and they all tasted as you would imagine them too but they were all a little soggy and squidgy really. Not bad though and it was all edible at least!

Sort of over that and within it you have a red jelly. I think it's meant to be strawberry flavoured and it's smooth and transparent and again very gloopy rather than set. Over that then you then have a light golden sponge which is rather airy and again not too sweet and mops up some of the juices thankfully. I rather like the sponge and find it adds a good contrast in flavours and textures. Over that you have yellow custard again this isn't all that flavoursome but what I do like about it though is it's rich consistency and that it's not runny or anything like that and it is a little creamy and like everything else naturally sweet tasting opposed to being crammed with sweeteners or owt like that.

Over that is a thick layer of pure white cream. Not sloppy but stiffish in it's consistency and the cream is the best bit in my humble opinion and finishes it all off nicely and sort of holds everything else together a little bit. Overall this is not a bad tasting trifle however....

...due to the sloppiness of the whole thing it is difficult to serve up and to make it look presentable. Not very appetising looking if your serving it to guests but in the taste department I rather like it. It's not all that luxurious but I appreciate the naturalness of the flavours in this and me, I shall deffo eat it again if I get the chance!
