“ Type: Ice Cream „
After being impressed by the Strawberry Cheesecake yogurt yesterday I decided to try the Cherry Garcia flavour ice cream. Being a firm fan of other cherry flavoured desserts that I've tried previously I was hoping that I'd like this as well.
Please note that this review is the for 150ml / 106g size pot
The ice cream comes in a paper pot which is mainly pink in colour. The pot has pictures of some cherries on the front along with some chocolate pieces. It tells us that it contains 106g / 150ml of the ice cream. The pot also contains the ingredients, contact details for "Ben & Jerry's Uk Pad" and the address of the website: www.benjerry.co.uk.
There is no nutritional information listed on the pot at all.
The ingredients for this flavour are: Cream (30%), Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Cherries, Egg Yolks, Coconut Oil, Cocoa, Cherry Puree Concentrate, Stabilisers(Guar Gum, Carrageenan), Natural Flavours, Milkfat, Emulsifier (Soya Lechithin)
The pot describes the product as:- "Cherry Ice Cream with Cherries (10%) and Dark Chocolate Chunks (5%)"
On opening the pot this does look very tempting. It's a deep pink and you can see little bits of cherries and chunks of chocolate. There's a "wooden spoon" under a paper flap in the lid so I pull this out and dig in.
At time of writing my local shop are selling various Ben and Jerry's flavours for 69p.
Taste and opinion:
As I took my first mouthful of this I was more than pleased with it. Much, much, much better than the awful Half Baked and Cookie Dough flavours that I've tried recently and, due to the richness of the cherry flavour it ranks ahead of the Strawberry Cheesecake for me as well.
The main problem with this is the size of the tub! It's just finished far too quickly and leaves you wanting more. Think I'll have to keep an eye out for when the larger sizes are on offer and then stock up with them.
So, what's it like? I suppose that you could say it's like the topping to a black forest gateau (without the remnants of any cakey bits obviously). The chocolate bits are sizeable enough that you can actually taste them but not so large enough that you have to chew them a lot before you swallow. The chocolate has that slightly bitter taste that you associate with dark chocolate and this makes a nice contrast with the sweetness of the cherry flavoured ice cream.
The cherry bits are reasonably sizeable as well and slightly more chewy than the chocolate although, on a personal note I would prefer slightly more of them in the ice cream.
Upto now this is by far the best Ben & Jerry's flavour I've tasted. Even Boyfriend who liked the below par Half Baked and Cookie Dough agrees that this is head and shoulders above the rest of the flavours we've tried. If you haven't sampled it yet try it sometime soon.
Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia
Description - ice cream
A 500ml tub of this ice cream costs around £3.85 normally, but Somerfield were recently selling it for half price, which was a definite bargain. The problem is that you tend to buy more and therefore eat more when it is on offer because there is something really morish about Ben and Jerry's. I ended up buying 2 tubs instead of 1, and the Cherry Garcia flavour was one of them.
I always find that with Ben and Jerry's ice cream, it is best to leave it out for a few minutes before scooping as it makes it easier to spoon out. This is no exception and if you can bear to wait, it makes it so much easier to get it into the bowl.
There are loads of cherries in this ice cream, and heaps of chocolate chunks too. It has a fantastically creamy consistency and practically every mouthful is packed with cherries and chocolate. If you imagine a creamy, ice cream version of a black forest gateau then you will get the idea!
Nutritional information per 100g is as follows

This is a definite favourite with me because it has such a rich and deliciously sweet taste, the chocolate chunks are slightly bitter in comparison and offset the sweetness well. The cherries are chunky and chewy and despite being packed in ice cream, manage to be succulent and easy to bite into.
I definitely recommend this flavour, in my opinion, it is one of the best and sure to be a hit with cherry lovers and fans of black forest gateau too. If you haven't tried it yet then you definitely need to look out for it, it is delicious!
4 stars from me, simply because it isn't very good for you!
mmmm Ben and Jerrys... where to begin!?
Cheery Garcia is one of the Ben and Jerrys classic flavors, and without a doubt a firm favorite with the public thats here to stay. Like most Ben and Jerrys products it's a heavy icecream base, made from milk, cream, sugar and eggs, in this case with a cherry flavor 'filling'. It quotes as being a 'Cherry Ice cream, with Cherries and Fudge flakes'.
It's quite a lot sweeter than you'd expect from a fruit flavored icecream, but in general I've found that to be true of most Ben and Jerrys flavors. The addition of the fudge flakes goes a long way towards this, but in my personal opinion this is what makes it the fantastic icecream that it is.
Although not my favorite (that title goes to cookie dough) this is the sort of icecream that you can buy, then discover a few hours later that you've eaten the whole tub of and still want more!
Actually there is both an Ice Cream version and a Low Fat Yoghurt version (which has a blue label). I've tried the Yoghurt version and it's fantastic! Probably just a little less tasty than the ice cream, but more than good enough for me, and only half the calories!
I'm a bit worried about writting this review because I really don't want to be tempted to go out and buy it.
This particular ice cream really reminds me of being in spain having a cherry ice cream. So its tastey and nostalgic. It would be good to have bigger cherries with a cherry sharp taste with a creamy taste to make it more mouth watering.
Ben and Jerrys are a very good brand. And now you can usually buy it from your pizza delivery service, or a local shop, supermarket.
I give this 8/10. Its a tastey treat but it does have about 3/4 of a womans daily reccommended allowance I think its around 1500 calories. If your anything like me you can easily eat a tub to yourself. A bit worrying really! I heard one of the employees died early from eating too much of the stuff. So be warned.
Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia is actually a Low Fat Frozen Yoghurt and not classed as an Ice Cream. It is made with flavoured Yoghurt and contains real pieces of Bing Cherries (firm cherries that ship well and are very large) and chocolate chuncks. It is said that this flavour was a tribute to Jerry Garcia from the Grateful Dead (vocalist and lead guitar). If this flavour was made in your honour it would really be quite an honour indeed!
It has a delicious non sickly flavour that really does taste very much of a good rich cherry chocolate (probably because of the real cherries). It has a generous amount of fruit and chocolate chunks in it and I don't think you could have a spoonful without it being loaded with the above. The chocolate in it is kind of a bit bitter like dark chocolate and is reminiscent of a fruits of the forest gateau. The chocolate pieces are very slim and the cherries are very succulent and dont give you brain freeze when you bite into them.
It is £3.80 ish for a 500ml cardboard tub and although it is really too much for one person to eat, I always seem to find it hard to part with it!
