“ Brand: Ben & Jerry's / Type: Ice Cream „
I adore ice cream - in fact I can't get enough of the stuff! I'll happily chomp my way through whatever ice cream happens to be available at the time I get my ice cream cravings! In my time I've tried many brands, from value products to expensive luxury ones but one of my absolute favourite brands is Ben and Jerry's. I've eaten quite a few of their ice creams in the past and when Ben and Jerry's happened to be on offer in my local Tesco store I was tempted in to trying this - Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Macadamia Ice Cream.
Now, Ben and Jerry's is one of the more expensive brands at around £4 for a 500ml tub but you do get what you pay for - quality ice cream with a glorious flavour! The Chocolate Macadamia variety is also fair trade so I feel like I'm doing by bit, it means I can enjoy my ice cream all the more! On the back of the tub it also states that is it fine for vegetarians to eat and also that it's made using milk from friendly dairies, it seems that happy cows make tastier ice cream!
This ice cream in particular might not be to everyone's taste but if you like your nuts you'll love this. The ice cream is swirls of vanilla and chocolate, unfortunately it's not as rich as the ice cream in other varieties such as the Phish Food or the Chocolate Brownie. The nuts in this ice cream are whole macadamias coated in chocolate, they're very nutty in flavour (obviously) and can taste a bit salty. Personally I didn't mind this at all as I happen to like things such as peanut butter but some people might be put off by the salty-ness.
Unlike Phish Food this ice cream is just ice cream and nuts, it has no added marshmallow or caramel. Being someone who thinks the richer the better I was a little disapointed by that, chocolate sauce or something would of really livened it up and made it that oh so much tastier. Ben and Jerry's usually produce gorgeous ice cream and I must say this isn't one of their best, saying that I'd still eagerly gobble it down! But then again, I am a fan of nuts. Overall a nice ice cream but it lacks the rich ice cream that Phish Food and Chocolate Brownie has.
This ben and jerrys flavour is currently the only one which I do not like. It is to do with the macadamia nuts in them. Now I have never tasted them before and I do not know if its something about the ice cream product or the nuts which make this product nasty but I will explain my problem. The thing which does not work is the very salty flavour and gritty texture from the product. If you like macadamia nuts and you recognise that flavour you will like this ice-cream. If you don't them I would move on because the chocolate coated does not do anything to cut out the saltiness and niether does the chocolate ice cream. this is not to the same recipe as the very rich choc brownie flavour so there has been some effort to balance flavours but not enough. As usual the flavour is around the £5 mark with many offers and promotions out there.
After realising I am in love with Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream I am going to try each one that the UK have to offer. I have already tried Phish Food, Cookie Dough, Caramel Chew Chew, Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Cookie Dough so when the Co-Op leaflet came through the door I went to see what they had to offer in our local store. I was disappointed though to see they didn't have many flavours.
The only one that they had that I hadn't already tried was the Chocolate Macadamia from the Fair Trade range they offer. So I picked up a tub and couldn't wait to get home to try it. I still am in shock that I had never tried Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream until the end f 2009. I really thought that they were only available in America and wasn't at all aware they had realised a small range in the UK.
The Chocolate Macadamia comes in the same round 500ml tub as most of the other flavours. On the front of the tub it shows the usual information of the Ben & Jerry's logo, the name of the Ice Cream but the picture on the front is a country scene with a cow on the right hand side and Nuts on the left hand side. This particular tub also shows the Fair Trade Logo also. The description on the front of the tub describes the product as 'Chocolate & Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolaty Covered Macadamia Nuts'.
On the back of the tub the information comes in four different languages. On the right hand side of the back label it gives you all the information of Ben & Jerry's and how it originated. It also tells you the Fair Trade information as well. As usual the back shows you the Nutritional information, Ingredients and what to do if you are not happy with the product.

I couldn't wait to get into the tub but I couldn't. Around the top is a plastic strip to keep the item fresh and to ensure you are unable to open before purchase. This should have also advised after purchase as I really couldn't open it. After a knife and pair of Scissors later I finally opened the tub. Phew what a mission it was to get in the tub, it better be worth it. Looking at the top if the Ice Cream the Chocolate and Vanilla swirls it really did look so appealing. So I dug in.
I find all Ben & Jerry's a bit hard to start and this one was no different, I popped it into the Microwave for a few seconds and proceeded to eat. The taste was amazing, the Chocolate and Vanilla was such a lovely mix. And I also got a few separate bits of flavour as well. It was such a rich, velvety taste and so more-ish. It was lovely. Then after a while I came across a Chocolate covered Macadamia nut.
The Chocolate covering the nuts tasted exactly the same as you would get in a pick and mix bag of Chocolate cover Nuts and Raisins which I can honestly say I was not overly impressed with it. But I just sucked all the Chocolate off to get the Macadamia Nut on the inside. As soon as I crunched one of the nuts it was the weirdest taste on the world. You could taste that they were roasted which I thought was a bit odd to be in the middle of Ice Cream.
As I got through the tub I didn't find a lot of the Nuts as I was quite disappointed as the more I had the more I liked them. They are an odd combination to have with the Ice cream but something about them made it work. All I can say is that you need to try them. I would again.
I'm Ben & Jerry's obsessed and can't help myself visit the freezer aisles of Asda or Tesco to browse the flavours available and usually pick up a carton of ice cream. I'm not the most adventurous and there are usually three flavours I stick to but since the ice cream has been on special in many supermarkets I have decided to be more adventurous and try more flavours... the most recent was Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Macadamia Ice Cream.
***What Is It?**
Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Macadamia Ice Cream is white and chocolate ice cream with pieces of macadamia nuts covered in milk chocolate within the ice cream.
The B & J's Chocolate Macadamia Ice Cream comes in a 500ml cardboard ice cream tub with lid, very similar to the other products from the brand. The tub is blue with white clouds on the front of the carton.
On the front of the carton is the Ben & Jerry's logo, images of chocolate covered Macadamia nuts. There is a fair trade logo on the front of the carton also.
On the back of the tub there is a description about the Ben & Jerry's brand and company values.
A 500ml tub costs £3.98 in Asda and Tesco. This is very expensive. The supermarkets often have special offers on Ben & Jerry's products offering BOGOF offers or half price offers which still makes the ice creams relatively expensive but much better value for money and worth stocking up on.
***Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Macadamia Ice Cream***
When you open the ice cream carton you are met with a subtle sweet chocolate scent. This is not such a chocolately aroma as some of the other Ben & Jerry's flavours.
The ice cream is a mixture of white and milk chocolate swirled within each other. You can then see pieces of milk chocolate covered Macadamia nuts within the ice cream.
I initially found the ice cream delicious when I just had a spoonful of milk and white chocolate ice cream. This had a lovely sweet creamy taste, with a subtle chocolate flavour. The chocolate ice cream had a strong flavour but it was a lot lighter and less rich than the chocolate ice cream in the chocolate Brownie ice cream and Phish Food ice cream. The texture of the ice cream is delicious it is firm yet very creamy and silky.
I then had a spoonful of ice cream with chocolate covered macadamia nuts in and my opinion of the ice cream changed. The chocolate covered macadamia nuts have a very nutty yet extremely salty flavour to them. This salty flavour does not mix well with the sweet ice cream and leaves a strange flavour in your mouth. The nuts also have quite gritty salty texture which does not mix with the smooth ice cream and the nuts totally over power the delicious subtle ice cream.
Per 100g serving
The product is also suitable for vegetarians.
This is not a "healthy product" as you would expect from an ice cream containing chocolate and nuts. Therefore if you are watching your weight opt for a different Ben & Jerry's ice cream or eat in moderation.
Very surprisingly this is one product from Ben & Jerry's I would not recommend.
The white and milk chocolate flavoured ice cream is pleasant and has a nice creamy, rich chocolately flavour yet is spoilt by the chocolate covered Macadamia nuts. I love nuts however the Macadamia nuts are extremely salty. The salty flavour with the sweet creamy ice cream and milk chocolate coating on the nuts does not go together.
A flavour to avoid and hopefully will end up in the Ben & Jerry's graveyard.
I've got a new favourite flavour!
Pleasingly, this Ben & Jerry creation is not only made with Fairtrade sugar, vanilla & cocoa, but it's also vegetarian & climate neutral - which is like carbon neutral but more so, because it takes into account such emissions as methane. This makes me feel like I've done some kind of civic duty in polishing off an entire tub with my friend, rather than some greedy gannet who's just consumed - dear me - nearly 600 calories.
You know when you've pigged on Ben & Jerry's though, because it's so rich & creamy (this one: 30% cream!) & extremely satisfying. I thought this variety has got the balance of flavours just right: rich chocolate icecream layered with lighter vanilla, with just the right ammount of chocolate-coated crunchy macadamias - which surprisingly are quite salty to give a nice bit of variety. it's not as sickly as some of the others in the range as it lacks stuff like marshmallows & caramel which sometimes make Ben & Jerry's a bit oversweet for me. A winner.
I was not totally convinced by this flavour when I saw it however a review on this site convinced me to give it a try, how I wished I had read the second review on the site before I did because it was the latter one that more closely matched my own opinions of this ice cream offerring from Ben and Jerry's. Usually their ice cream is top draw when it comes to quality and I do not mind paying the extra as the flavours are quite orignal and always taste lovely.
I found the chocolate ice cream in this particular offerring to be rather harsh and not really that chocolately rather a more chemical taste to it, this seems strange because you would think it is the same chocolate ice cream that they use as a base in some of their other varieties. It could have been the influence of the macademia nuts which are coated in chocolate as well. There are plenty of these in the ice cream and they are nice and crunchy, macademia nuts are not something I would normally consider buying however in ice cream they do work well.
The packaging is the usual bright innovative design and the ice cream is nice and smooth in texture it is just the taste combnation does not work for me and to be honest most of the contents ended up in the bin as my boyfriend did not like it either and I would not give something containing nuts to anyone else just in case they have a reaction.
One of the few Ben and Jerry's ice creams I would not recommend.
Normally I would be preparing to sit down to write a gushing tribute to another great Ben and Jerrys ice cream as I have always loved their stuff however unfortunately that is not the case with this particular offerring as it was rather average which given the generally premium price nature of this product is not good enough as you would expect better from them given that it is £3.99 or a 500ml pot in some shops.
It comes in the usual cardboard carton style with the colourful funky style you expect of Ben and Jerry's.
The ice crean is a blend of chocolate and vanilla flavours however it is the chocolate which is the dominant flavour and it was the ice cream that I found to be a bit gritty and not as smooth in texture or flavour that you usually expect, maybe I had a rogue tub but both my partner and I had the same opinion of this ice cream. It is best to let the ice cream stabnd for a few minutes before serving when taken straight from the freezer.
The macademia nuts are plentiful and coated in chocolate and they give the whole thing a nice crunch when you get one in your mouth. Definatly not suitable for those with nut allergies or trying to control your wait as it is loaded with calories.
This ice cream was purchased solely for my fiancé, Tom, as I can be a real ice cream piggy and he usually gets the smaller share of things so I try and buy him something that I won't like myself & as I am not a big fan of any sort of nut I didn't think this would appeal to me but alas, I gave it a try & I loved it.
The ice cream is provided in a cardboard pot which is recyclable (once empty of course!) and it is made with all natural ingredients. There is chocolate & Fairtrade vanilla ice cream along with lots of macadamia nuts and these appear to be coated in chocolate or something and are quite large. The ice creams compliment each other well and have that delicious, familiar, creamy taste of Ben & Jerry's and the macadamia nuts are a really welcome addition to the ice cream. The whole thing melts very nicely when left on the side for 10 or 15 minutes without being too sloppy and the nuts are lovely and crunchy and taste far superior to any other nuts I've ever tried.
Overall I would definitely recommend this ice cream, even if, like me, you aren't a huge fan of nuts as I was suitably impressed with this and a little disappointed that I had my own pot of Phish Food (my favourite!) to enjoy. A large pot lasted Tom for a good 2 or 3 sessions of munching and he was very impressed that I had selected such a good choice for him as he usually prefers fruit based ice creams. As this is ice cream and it is made with lots of natural ingredients, and real cream, it is very high in calories but as I didn't dare look at that I really can't help, however, if you want more information feel free to check out the website at www.benandjerrys.co.uk.
I am rating the ice cream 5/5 as it was simply delicious. It is available for just under £4.00 for a 500ml pot and while this is expensive for ice cream I really see these as a luxury item and not a necessity (although I do need it quite regularly!) and therefore don't mind paying a little extra. Especially as we got our pots for 1/2 price in our local Co-Op. A great all round ice cream but avoid if you have nut allergies.
