Ben & Jerry's Half Baked
Advantages: Tastes great and is fun.
Disadvantages: Some brownie pieces are too dried out.
I recently bought a tub of this on a very hot day because I was in need of something sweet and ice cold to refresh me. I was in Morrisons when I saw this ice cream on offer for £2 for a 500ml tub. I remembered seeing it days before in a Tesco store at more than twice this price, so realised I was getting a bargain.
The Ben and Jerry's brand is very creative and clever when it comes to inventing their ice cream flavours and this 'Half Baked' variety is a fine example of the brand at their best. This is a blend of two ice cream flavours - chocolate and vanilla. I wasn't sure how this might work at first as I imagined the tub might be layered with the different flavours. In actual fact the two ice creams are blended together and this creates a marbled, swirling effect of creaminess through the darker mudcake style chocolate ice cream. The ice cream mix also has a few surprises in it. There are lumps of chocolate chip cookie dough as well as slices of fudge brownie thrown into the blend. Ben and Jerry's describe this special blend as a combination of two of their other ice cream flavours - the vanilla cookie dough and the chocolate fudge brownie. It was invented in the year 2000.
The ice cream comes in a big tub with an easy to remove lid although when you remove the lid the ice cream is literally bulging over the edge of the tub! The tub has plenty of information printed on it including full ingredients in multiple languages. There are some important stamps on the side of the carton such as the Fair Trade mark which is a guarantee that the cocoa, sugar and vanilla ingredients in the ice cream have been obtained in accordance with the International Fair Trade standards. There is also a quirky 'caring dairy' stamp on the tub - this is an initiative to establish better standards in dairy farming. You can read more about this at the caringdairy.com website or the Ben and Jerry's website.
Ingredients include 25% cream, condensed skimmed milk, sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, cocoa butter and more including 48% of dry matter. The fudge brownie pieces come in at 8% whilst there are 10% of cookie dough lumps.
As someone who loves chocolate but isn't a huge fan of ice cream I find this 'Half Baked' is the perfect option. The fudge brownie pieces are substantial enough to be able to have a good chew and to feel that gooey cake texture melting away. The cookie dough is sweet, soft, stodgy and packed with tiny chocolate chips which are a treat for my tastebuds. The combination of these things is wonderfully tasty and I like that it is more filling and satisfying than plain ice cream.
I didn't think the combination of the vanilla and chocolate ice creams would really work and assumed that the chocolate flavour would be dominant but in actual fact the vanilla is very noticable as it is so milky and has a cool, sophisticated vanilla flavour that contrasts with the rich chocolate flavour. The quality of the chocolate and vanilla ice creams is very high and the creamy texture is probably one of the best things about the product. Some other brands of ice cream put me off because they are so watery but this ice cream is silky, creamy and smooth.
The quality of the fudge brownie pieces is good but the occaisional piece in my tub was just slightly dry. This didn't affect the flavour though which was intensely chocolatey and sugary. Note that they are referred to as 'fudge brownies' and there is an obvious caramel-like fudge flavour to the brownie pieces. They taste a little bit like uncooked cake mixture too. I enjoy the flavour so much that I'd love to buy the brownies if they were available as a cake product!
I really like the texture of the cookie dough pieces which are found in marble sized chunks throughout the ice cream. They are like chewy biscuits. The chocolate chips in them are tiny but the chocolate is dark and bitter so this is quite a distinctive flavour.
I found that the brownie pieces and the dough were distributed evenly throughout my tub and as well as being in bigger chunks I often found smaller shards. The combined flavour of all the elements is really great and it's a dream for me and will be for anyone who likes gooey, chocolatey, extreme and fun deserts!
As mentioned this ice cream can be quite expensive but I've seen it on offer in several stores recently so I advise shopping around to get the best deal. I wouldn't like to pay more than £5 for a tub this size but I'm happy to pay £2-3 for a tub. You can also get smaller treat size tubs of Ben and Jerry ice creams too.
Summary: Tasty, high quality, exciting ice cream.
