      Advantages

      Disadvantages

It's an ok ice cream, you know what to expect.

This ice cream flavour is nice don't get me wrong but it's not what I'd go for first in a supermarket. I find the chocolate fishes in it to be a little too hard and for me that doesn't really marry up with the soft texture of the ice cream.

Having said that though, when I do buy a tub I am guilty of setting the whole tub of it (ice creams addictive like that isn't it?). It's sweet but it's not sickly sweet, so you'll find yourself putting that spoon back up to your mouth again and again.

Another good point is the packaging, as it's quite sturdy you can happily sit and eat the tub on the sofa without fearing for the tub decaying and melting all over your lap! And if you are sharing, I like that you can just rip the tub up and cut through block of ice cream in half.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      good ice cream

I am a massive fan of all things sweet. When I was growing up enjoying an ice cream was part of summer, I have fond memories of buying something from the ice cream van. As an adult I love being able to buy the "posh" varieties in the supermarket!

      Price/Availability

Phish food in the Ben and Jerrys range is widely available in supermarkets. I've never had an issue in finding it, although it is sometimes sold out when on offer. Phish food like most of B&J range is in 500ml tubs and retails at £4.49 each however this is almost always on offer in one of the supermarkets, offers usually half price, or save 1/3, buy 2 for £xx and so forth, I myself only ever buy when on offer. This is also available at some fast food outlets and can form a part of a meal deal or be brought individually but you will need to check your local eatery for details on this.

      Packaging

The tubs are very user friendly, they fit perfectly in your hand so no need for a bowl when eating (just creates more washing up) and has the distinctive B&J logo on the front. The Phish food is mainly dark purple colour packaging but the writing is in blue, each B&J tub has a different design for each flavour so they are easy to tell apart. The lid is easy to come off, its sealed by plastic all round and has no "lid" seal on the inside so once the plastic is off you can remove the lid and dig in!

      Taste

B&J and indeed most ice creams taste better once softened a bit. I always take mine out of the freezer about 10 minutes before I eat it as this gives it time to soften up. The ice cream itself is chocolate with caramel, marshmallow and chocolate fish shaped pieces. Taste wise it is very chocolately and sweet so you don't need much, a tub probably lasts me 4/5 servings but sometimes I can eat half a tub in one so it just depends on my mood of the day so although it cam seem expensive it does last. The chocolate ice cream itself tastes lovely and smooth and the ripple of caramel and marshmallow gives it a new flavour to compliment along side it. The are plenty of fish pieces inside and these are nice smooth chocolate flavoured chucks and work great with the ice cream, caramel and marshmallow. Some ice creams can leave me feeling sick but this doesn't, its rich but it means I don't eat loads of it to satisfy my cravings. Nutrition wise, it is clear on the back what it contains but a serving (which I assume is 1/4 of a tub) is 230 calories which I think is not to bad considering, as a sweet person I can eat double that amount in calories to get my hit so this is good in comparison

      Overall

As mentioned above I only ever get when on offer, £4.49 is a lot of money for a tub of ice cream and so I would not buy it at that price but when on offer its definitely the choice for me in the ice cream aisle!

A good product for the average sweet tooth

I find this product very sickly sweet. I am not a huge fan of chocolate ice cream but whereas I can eat a whole tub of Cookie Dough but I can barely eat a quarter of this Phish Food. It's not just overly sweet but it is sickly sweet where you would feel physically sick after eating. However, this product is nice in small amounts not generous amounts. I have a huge sweet tooth myself but even I draw the line at this product. The product myself I think is very chocolatey as it is mostly made up of it.

The product comes in a purple cardboard tub with a black lid. It has the branding image of Ben and Jerry's on the front and the product logo written in bright blue writing. Usually the design has caramel and chocolate swirls on the front with the chocolate fish demonstrated. The design is then re-printed on the cardboard lid. I personally think that the design is very stylish and it is what got me to buy the product in the first place because I found it very attractive.

You can buy this product from most supermarkets and stores for just under £5.00. However, majority of the time one of the branded supermarkets will sell this product at half price for a limited amount of time. This price being at around £2.25 per carton.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Too sweet for me, but worth trying

This particular flavour of Ben and Jerry's used to be my default impulsive junk food 10 PM purchase when I was a student, but I haven't really tasted it since. A few weeks ago, Sainsbury's had a half price offer on all B&J ice-creams (which, considering they're usually at about 5 pounds, is a definite draw), so I thought it was high time to get reacquainted with what used to be my favourite dessert though unfortunately, as is often the case, the nostalgic memory was better than the reality.

Ben & Jerry's are known for their elaborate flavours and ingredients combinations, and this one is the epitomy of their flavour philosophy, with a blend of thick chocolate ice-cream, caramel swirls, melted marshmallow and, of course, fudge fish, which give the flavour what should be an unapetising name (and thankfully the shape is the only thing that has to do with fish in the ice-cream: no fish flavour in this brand, though I'm sure actual fish ice-cream exists somewhere in the world).

The packaging is the familiar Ben and Jerry's pint tub, with the little fish on a violet background giving it that extra whimsical quality. Despite boasting all-natural ingredients, the ingredients list is best not read, as like most US products contains the dreaded words "corn" and "syrup". No matter, since nobody is seriously expecting this product to be healthy.

As for the ice-cream itself-the first spoonfull assaults your taste buds with a chocolate explosion, which is nice enough...and then you get to the other ingredients. The fish are pleasantly chewy, but personally not a huge draw for me, beyond the visual appear. The thick, dark caramel however is a treat and really complimentary to the chocolate, and the marshmallow swirls are personally my favourite thing, and quite different to most other ice-cream flavours. All those flavours work really well together...for about three spoonfulls. That's right, I was chagrined to discover that unlike my student days, this was simply too sweet for me. Even starting from the base ice-cream and ignoring all the rest, the consistency is too creamy and cloyingly sweet, and not at all refreshing. If you factor in the toppings, it's less like ice-cream and more like eating a chilly melted cake. A pretty good cake, but one that tends to fall like a brick on your stomach. I think my palette definitely favours simpler ice-cream flavours these days.

My verdict: while I wouldn't refuse a spoonfull at a friend's house or something, I don't see myself buying this again. However, if you don't mind too sweet flavours, this definitely is the one for you.

          Advantages

there is no way to summarise how good this ben and jerry is

This is the best ice-cream I've had to date. I would just leave it at that but then i would get any miles so whats so good about the phish food? well for starts its made mostly of rich chocolate ice-cream then you marshmallows mixed through that ice-cream and then you have little chocolate shaped like a fish all this combines to make a treat that nobody can pass up.
Although it does carry the heft price tag that comes as standard of nben and jerry (£3.99) this one is worth it but beware once you stop it is quite hard to stop until you find the bottom of the tub but there is a fact that can help with the guilt of eating yourself sick on ice-cream.....The tubs recyclable so you can tell yourself its all for the planet.
I need say no more it has the taste and texture of a luxury item and if you can find it buy one get one free stock up i always do.

Go Phish a tub outta the freezer section at the local shop!

I think many of you reading this review will agree that Ben and Jerrys make one of the best ranges of ice cream at the moment. I have to disagree with you, though, as I think they make THE best most exciting variety of flavours around. Looking at their website is is interesting to find that Ben doesnt actually have much sense of taste (hence the big chunks of texture) and also that Ben and Jerrys was all started in 1978 in an old gas station. Their current range is as follows:

          Caramel Chew Chew
          Chunky Monkey (Fairtrade)
          Baked Alaska
          Phish Food
          Chocolate Fudge Brownie (Fairtrade)
          Chocolate Macadamia (Fairtrade)
          Fairly Nuts (Fairtrade)
          Half Baked
          Cookie Dough
          Chocolate Fudge Brownie (Low Fat)
          Cherry Garcia (Low Fat)
          Phish Food (Low Fat)
          Strawberry Cheesecake (Low Fat)

I think out of all the different flavours of Ben and Jerrys ice-cream, Phish food is my favourite flavour. With a mix of melted marshmallow, swirled with a sticky caramel sauce, in chocolate flavoured melt in the mouth ice cream. It also has little chocolate fish in it, which give it an unusual texture for ice-cream as they are crunchy. It sounds very sickly but i find i could easily eat the whole tub.

Although it is quite expensive, I have to keep on getting it. The low fat varieties are all sold as frozen yoghurt so I cant speak of their taste but I find all the Ben and Jerrys ice creams very enjoyable. I particularly recommend the Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Cookie Dough varieties. Expense is my only negative for this ice-cream, but if you are looking to try something different you can get a 500ml tub for £1.99 from Tesco's at the moment, it usually sells for £3.99.

          A delicious treat.

I love chocolate ice cream, so a few months ago when I saw Phish food at my local Sainsbury's I had to get some.

I love the unique name of this ice cream. Phish food. It doesn't make sense (at least not to me, although it obviously has something to do with the fish-shaped chocolate pieces in the ice cream) but I think it's a fun name nonetheless and is what I expect from Ben and Jerry's.

Phish Food comes in a colourful, circular tub. As soon as you pull the lid off, you are greeted by a gorgeous chocolatey smell, and delicious looking ice cream. Phish food consists of rich chocolate ice cream, bits of chewy marshmallow, swirls of caramel sauce, and fish-shaped chocolate bits. The marshmallows melt in your mouth and the chocolate fish are delicious! The ice cream is very creamy and sweet, but not sickly and I can have half a tub in one go (and that's when I'm trying to control myself!). That's why I hardly ever buy it.

At £3.99 for a 500 ml tub, it is a little expensive. For the health-conscious, here is some nutritional information (per 100g):
          Calories: 260kcal/1100kJ
          Fat: 13g (8.5g saturated)

As you can see, this ice cream isn't exactly healthy or cheap, and that is why I think of it as an indulgent treat. If you're a chocolate lover, you need to try this as it makes you feel like you are in chocolate heaven!

high quality chocolate ice crem with yoghurt, caramel, marshmallow and chocolate pieces

Ben and Jerry, bless them, have done it again. This ice cream is nothing short of sublime. Unfortunately, it is a bit costly at £4ish and so I only have it occasionally. It is comprised of thick, creamy chocolate ice cream, and mixed in with it is yoghurt, marshmallow, caramel and bits of chocolate - shaped like fish! Don't be put off if this sounds like too many flavours in one, it is balanced very well. This is a flavour unique to Ben and Jerry's and well worth trying out, if only as a special indulgence. Once you have had it, I bet you'll have it again. I find that coming in a 500ml pot it is a good size for two people who really fancy some ice cream and comes out of the fridge soft - testament to its quality of creaminess. It is, of course, wildly unhealthy, but hey, ice cream is supposed to be a treat, and if you're going to treat yourself, do it properly.

The best ice cream i have come across

I am very new to the wonder that is Ben & Jerry's ice cream and have to say i haven't looked back!!

Phish Food is by far my favourite flavour in this range of Ice Cream - it is chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, caramel swirls and fish shaped dark chocolate chunks. This is the ultimate in comfort food i have found, and can cheer me up on a bad day! Even my mum (who as a rule absolutely hates ice cream) loves this flavour!!

Although it is quite expensive, at about £3.99 a pot unless you can get it on offer - Asda or Tesco tend to have it on offer at times - i think it is totally worth every penny as it is a really high quality ice cream. Even from the freezer it isn't one of these ice creams that comes out rock hard so its a pleasure to eat straight away.

I can't praise this ice cream highly enough at all, its fantastic!

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

                A nice occasional treat

Ben and Jerrys is a premium ice cream brand. This is reflected in every area of their product - quality, packaging, originality and also unfortunaltey price. Setting you about £5 for a 0.5 litre tub - that about 4 small-medium size portions, can it justify it's massive price tag - this sort of price is fine from the ice cream man on the beach, but for an ice cream you serve to yourself at home, it's quite an ask...

Phish Food, fortunatley, doesn't taste like fish, or even fish food. Instead it tastes of awesomness. It is mainly a chocolate ice cream, which is always one of my least favourites, but this is lovely, quite rich but also creamy, it actually tastes of chocloate, not choclate powder or chocolate substitue.

It is complimented perfectly by swirls of marshmellow - these are not little bits of marshmellow you can pick out, but instead it runs through the product in thin whisps that look as though some vanilla ice cream hasn't been stirred in carefully enough. The creamy soft edge of the marshmellow tempers out the choclate so you don't feel sick after three spoonfuls.

Like the swirls of marsmellow, there are also swirls of caramel - this could again make the ice cream too sweet, but the addition on little chocolate fishes, that individually eaten are quite bitter, balances out the whole mix.

The only downside is that when you leave it out the freezer so it can soften a little in order that you can scoop it out the tub, the outside edge melts whilst the inside stays rock hard - this causes problems with the quality when you refreeze it. So, the ideal solution is to eat it all in one go!

I really like this ice cream, but the price and hardness of it when fresh out the freezer take it down to 4 stars - half a point off for each rather than one off for each as you expect to pay a lot for a premium product, and perhaps making it softer would ruin the quality.

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

Some of the best ice cream money can buy

In my somewhat humble opinion, Ben & Jerry's' is some of the best ice cream money can buy, in spite of its hefty price tag. The massive range of well thought of flavors, as well as their often charitable, or fair trade connections makes Ben & Jerry's my personal favorite. Phish food itself is one of the better flavors, especially for chocolate lovers, as it contains large fish shaped chocolate pieces, as well as marshmallow and caramel. The thick and slow melting ice cream itself is some of the best on the market, and is definitely worth its weight in gold. Unlike some other brands, Ben and Jerry's is very liberal on its quantity of additions (like the chocolate pieces) and I have never been disappointed with a pot. The only downside I can see of this great ice cream is the potential effort in burning all of its calories off, though I assure you; its worth the effort, especially if it can be found on offer, as it regularly is at major supermarkets.

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Good quality but not my favourite.

Ben and Jerry's Phish Food isn't my favourite choice of their ice creams, but is a good back up when my favourite's aren't available.

A 500ml tub of Ben & Jerry's costs £3.99, which I do find quite expensive, and I only buy it on rare occasions, but if it's ever on offer I snap it straight up. Sometimes Sainburys do two tubs for £5.00 which is a great deal.

I have no idea about the nutritional info about this, and to be honest I don't want to know, as it will ruin the pleasure of it for me. Ice cream isn't about healthiness it's about enjoyment and indulgence, so why ruin it by thinking about how many sit ups I will need to do to burn off the calories.

Phish food is described on the tub as chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, caramel & chocolatey chunks. So for all the chocoholics is definitely a must. I usually favour vanilla ice cream, but this is the only brand of chocolate ice cream I will eat.

The taste of this flavour along with most other Ben n Jerry's is delightful. The ice cream is creamy and thick, and the marshmallow swirls are all sticky and gooey. The chocolate chunks are shaped like fish and have caramel inside, these are actually the worst part for me, as I always find that they are bad quality chocolate, but with a bit of ice cream and marshmallow and the caramel inside them, they taste ok. The combination of all the flavours in this tub works really well, and there is always an abundance of the chocolate fish and marshmallow swirls.

My favourite flavour of Ben & Jerry's has to be the new one called Fairly Nuts, which I will always chose over this, but this is a very close second, and still a brilliant option.

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Highly recommend as an occasional treat

Ben & Jerry's phish food is a high end, rich ice cream which is utterly delicious but also expensive. It is made up of chocolate ice cream, marshmallow, caramel and fudge fish. I have to admit it is my treat of choice when having a bad day!

Ben & Jerry's was started in 1978 and has grown into an exceptionally successful ice cream company on both sides of the pond, with so many flavours available it would take weeks to try them all. Phish food has proven to be extremely popular, and even has its own facebook page!

Phish food comes in a 500 ml cardboard tub. Although more environmentally friendly, the soft packaging can and does get squashed in the freezer once some of the ice cream has been eaten. I'd recommend either being careful not to put anything on top of it, or eat the whole tub in one sitting! Needless to say, it should be kept in the freezer and will keep for several months (in theory, mine has never lasted longer than a week!).

Per serving (101 grams) is 270 calories, 12 grams of fat (of that, the saturated fat aka the bad stuff is 9 grams which is 44% of your daily allowance) and 22 grams of sugar. Obviously, this is not a food to have with every meal, but as an occasional treat it shouldn't do you any harm.

Taste wise I can't recommend phish food (and Ben & Jerry's in general) highly enough. The ice cream is rich and very chocolaty, the marsh mallow is pure sweetness while the caramel adds that luxurious edge. Then I also enjoy 'fishing out' (sorry, had to be done!) the fudge fishes which also have that good, rich taste and add some extra texture. I wouldn't recommend serving phish food with anything - it stands up just fine on its own.

                  /

I totally love ben and jerry's ice cream, but because of the price it is normally just a treat, so I took advantage when it was on special offer and put some in the trolley, particularly as phish food has been my favourite flavour of ice cream for a while!

The packaging is just the same as all of the other flavours of Ben and Jerry's - a reinforced cardboard tub with all of the information around the tub, and bright, vibrant colours on the packaging showing which flavour it is. This is fine for its job, if there was more then it would be a waste but be careful with where you're putting it in the freezer when its not full as it does tend to go out of shape when its squished!

The actual flavour of phish food is chocolate, caramel, marshmallows with little dark chocolate fishes in! It didn't use to have caramel in, and I really don't think that there was much point in putting it in as I preferred the ice cream without it. The main part of the ice cream, the chocolate, is definitely my favourite chocolate ice cream as it is just so nice but unfortunately it does tend to get quite addictive so it is good that after a while you will need to stop because to much can get quite sickly! The marshmallows make a nice addition and the chocolate used in the fishes is really good and makes a nice change in the ice cream, but I really don't like the caramel in it and I think that my favourite flavour is now the chocolate fudge brownie!

I'm normally quite reluctant to pay full price for Ben and Jerry's, although I love it I do think that £4 is a bit expensive for ice cream which is why I tend to get more than one tub when it's on offer, when I got it last week it was £2 at Netto. It is available in most supermarkets, some corner shops and at the cinema but this does tend to be overpriced!

                  Disadvantages

                  .

In my last review I mentioned that I had bought two pots of Ben & Jerry's for £5. This was my second choice and not one that I had tried before. It was clearly a popular flavour however as I noted that several people had helped themselves to a spoonful.

Again it is in a 500ml tub with the same flimsy packaging. Melting ice cream dribbling down the sides, numb fingers as I tried to dig the spoon in and paper scraps stuck to the top of the dessert itself. All of which happens every time I buy a pot. This, too expensive for me to purchase all the time, pudding would cost you £3.99 from Sainsburys at the moment but as I said they are offering a 2 for £5 deal. So personally I'd make the most of this if you do like to indulge in the Ben & Jerry range.

Phish food is a combination of ice cream, caramel, marshmallow and edible fish. A selection of flavours which are far from unpleasant. A base of chocolate ice cream gives you a sweet creamy taste but that's all it is. Nothing special. The soft caramel is swirled in along with dark chocolate chunks in the shape of a fish. They are quite hard though and several times I found myself being careful and using my side teeth rather than the front ones to bite into them. Even if you're not a big fan of dark chocolate the sweetness of the ice cream and marshmallow takes away some of the bitterness. It was the marshmallow sections which I enjoyed the most though. I'm not usually a big fan of the spongy morsels but the sticky swirls included in the ice cream gave it a different texture which was a lot more pleasant.

Now for a very obvious statement. This isn't a healthy product so you should expect it to have a high calorie and fat count. If you want to give yourself a 100ml serving you'll be consuming 220 calories and 5g fat. Just for 100ml. I don't share Ben & Jerry's ice cream unless payment is offered so one pot for me is giving me I think over half a days worth of calories. Not brilliant but it isn't as if I eat one every day of the week.

Overall I'd say this isn't my favourite. That's not to say I wouldn't buy it again though. A nice combination of sweet and bitter this is an indulgent treat and even though you have to wait for it to melt before eating otherwise your spoon won't go in, it's probably worth the money you spend. Just lovely!
