Carte D'Or Strawberry
Advantages: Refreshing, creamy and indulgent!
Disadvantages: Can't fault it!
Whilst we are lucky enough to get all this lovely weather at the moment (when it's not raining and the temperatures above 10 degrees it's considered lovely in this country!) I have found myself craving ice cream! It's just something that's associated with summer, it's cool and refreshing and usually makes a lower calorie treat than my winter box of choccies! So, me and my family were out today going for a lovely countryside walk after our Sunday lunch and came across one of those little old fashioned ice cream shops which was advertising selling Carte D'or ice-cream! Now obviously I couldn't resist one to refresh my palette after my Sunday roast, so in we went to choose our flavours!
~ About Carte D'or~
Carte D'or are an ice-cream company from walls. It was first marketed in 1978 based on their proposition that their flavours were natural and unadulterated and that the highest quality ingredients are used. Carte D'or produce ice-cream in large tubs and single serving tubs called my carte d'or in flavours which include caramel cinnamon waffle, chocolate inspiration, crema di mascarpone, dulce de leche, lavazza latte, rum and raisin, strawberry (the one I'm reviewing), amaretto vanilla & chocolate, vanilla, vanilla light, caramel and cherry.
~ Product and availability ~
Carte D'or is available to buy in well-stocked supermarkets such as Tesco's, Asda and Sainsbury's. It's around £2.85 for a 900ml tub and around £1.50 for a 200ml. However you may find some stores have offers on, I know Tesco's has any 2 for £5.00 on the 900ml and 2 for £2.50 on the 200ml at the moment. I don't think that £2.85 is that bad for such good quality ice-cream considering that a smaller Ben and Jerry's tub is sold somewhere between £3.00 and £4.00.
~ Packaging ~
Carte D'or ice-cream comes in a clear plastic tub with a gold plastic lid. The Carte D'or logo is printed on the lid and is accompanied by a relevant picture for instance chocolate sauce for chocolate flavoured ice-cream; in this case there are some fresh, juicy strawberries. I can't comment on what the packaging tells you and what it doesn't because I didn't buy a tub, I bought it in a cone (sorry :( !)
~ Appearance, texture and taste ~
Carte D'or strawberry ice-cream is very, very pink in colour. You can see the hidden strawberry pieces within the pink creaminess poking out. It looks extremely indulgent and very thick, proper ice-cream, none of this Mr.Whippy nonsense! The ice-cream lady seemed to scoop it out of the tub with ease which is handy to know. It was very soft, but not so soft that it was pouring all down the cone, just soft enough to give you that mmmmmm effect. Its texture was creamy and smooth with the occasional chewy strawberry piece to give it some bite. It tasted very much like ripe, fresh in season strawberries, not artificial or fake. You can definitely tell that it's made with good quality ingredients and the cream and strawberries complement each other immensely. There is just enough strawberry to allow you to have that taste sensation without it being too bitter.
~ Other information ~
2 scoops of carte D'or strawberry ice-cream contains 100 calories, 13g of sugar and 4g of fat. I don't think this is bad at all, it's a very decent sized serving that costs you very little calories.
Carte D'or strawberry ice-cream contains no artificial colours or flavours.
Obviously this ice-cream contains dairy so isn't suitable for anybody with a dairy intolerance or allergy.
The main ingredients are skimmed milk, strawberry pieces and sugar along with an array of scary looking ingredients such as carrageenan and fatty acids.
~ Overall opinion ~
Overall, I found this carte D'or ice-cream flavour a very refreshing, creamy and pleasant experience. I don't often buy carte D'or tubs but this has encouraged me to next time I'm shopping, I like the fact that it doesn't break the calorie bank and that it has actual strawberry pieces within it. I actually found this ice-cream quite light even though it tasted so indulgent, so it follows a heavy meal quite well and refreshes the palette nicely. I would recommend carte D'or to all ice-cream lovers and this has got to be a pleaser! There are some amazing sounding flavours in the range so if you're not a fruity lover there will be something else to satisfy your need for a cool treat!
Summary: Fully deserving of 5 stars! Is everything strawberry ice-cream should be and more!
