Advantages: Tastes nice
Disadvantages: Expensive, didn't make me feel any different!
I decided to start drinking Actimel last winter. I'd just suffered from a series of colds in very quick succession and was feeling extremely run-down with no energy at all. I'd seen the Actimel advert claiming that it would make you feel awesome, or your money back!! I figured I'd give it a go, and if it didn't work I'd just get my money back. I managed to find these at Asda for a special offer price of £1.28 for a pack of 8 which I found to be a really good price, and have seen them a lot more expensive elsewhere, roughly about £3 for 8.
I'd never taken a probiotic drink before, and I didn't particularly like yoghurt so I wasn't expecting to like it much but surprisingly I found it to be really delicious! I felt like I was taking a healthier option by having it for breakfast with my toast. I felt like I was getting a lot more nutrients than I would originally and it really helped to set me up for the day! Since then I have tried other flavours and I must say that so far the strawberry is my favourite flavour, but the original is still nice-tasting.
How to drink it? Well it's pretty simple! The bottle is about 4 inches tall, and the lid is a foil covering. You simple peel back the foil and drink out of the bottle. As I love the taste so much I kept buying these JUST for the lovely taste, and not even for the health benefits.
Each 100ml bottle contains only 75 calories, and there is a low fat option if you are trying to lose weight too! It's also only 0.1% fat which is great too, however there is a very high sugar content, something like 3 teaspoons per bottle which is crazy!
So. Do I feel any different? To be honest, not really! I certainly don't feel like that lady in the advert who is running around like a maniac, and jumping about all over the show! I didn't notice any difference in my energy levels, I still felt pretty lethargic and run-down. I still felt like I was taking a healthier option by having one of these everyday so I still kept up with it and didn't ask for my money back!
There is one big advantage to taking these though, and this is when you take them whilst you are on antibiotics. Antibiotics are well known to upset your digestive system while taking them, and I suffer really badly on them because I am so tiny! Antibiotics work by killing all of the infection that you have inside you, but it can't differentiate between good and bad bacteria, and so it ends up killing all your good bacteria too! This then leads to an unpleasant upset stomach. Actimel is a probiotic yoghurt and so contains lots of this "good bacteria" that antibiotics can kill off. I've found that drinking a bottle of actimel everyday really helps to reduce the negative effects of antibiotics and I would definitely recommend it to other to take in that situation.
Summary: Too expensive for hardly any benefits!
