Advantages: rich taste
Disadvantages: the calories
My partner often refers to me as being GÜ obsessed, well I am I love their chocolate desserts and this fairly new addition to their range is no exception. These little pots of heaven will solve anyone's chocolate craving but some may find it hard to stop at one.
These mini puds are not 'pudding' in the sense most of us would interpret but rather they are a pot of chocolate ganache which has been made with 53% cocoa chocolate. Ganache is normally made by heating double or whipping cream, then pouring it over chopped dark chocolate. The mixture is stirred or blended until smooth. It is used as a filling in high quality chocolates. I've made this stuff many times in the past when I was a pastry chef but it does take time and buying these was far easier. (or am I just getting lazy?)
Ok those on a diet may want to look away now....... Well ok but don't say I didn't warn you.
The box comes with three 50g pots of the ganache which may appear to be small at first but I doubt many people could eat more than one in a sitting. I eat mine with a tea spoon so that it lasts longer. Also a dessert spoon would not fit in the pot (I did try, honest). On peeling back the foil lid the first smell you get is that of the cocoa which is quite strong. This then subsides into a much more mellow and creamy smelling chocolate. It is remanisant of high quality milk chocolate.
hold on just taking another spoonful....mmmmmmm
The taste is rich and creamy and it just melts in the mouth. The cocoa taste is not overpoweing nor is it too sweet. The bitter sweet balance is just right. There is an after taste of the chocolate which lingers for some time. Unlike some cheaper versions of this there is no cloying feel in the mouth. The bitter tang comes from the dark chocolate used where as the milk chocolate adds a bit more sweetness.
The dessert contains milk and soya and it may contain gluten and nut traces. They are sutable for vegetarians.
Ok now for the bad bit - nutritonal info per 50g pot:
Energy - 222 Kcal
Protien - 1.7 g
Carbs - 12.1 g (sugars - 10.5 g)
Fat - 18.5 g (saturated - 11.6 g)
Fibre - 1.2 g
In my opinion these are very high in calories concidering the small amount you get in each pot which is mainly down to the cream used as this make up almost 30% of the pot. However, for the occasional treat they won't do a lot of harm. As with most GÜ products it does have a fairly short shelf life and they should be kept in the fridge as they are not sutable for freezing.
These normaly cost £1.79 in sainsbury's but at the moment they are on offer in my local one at £1.29 for the three pots. Anyway after eating just one of these I'm off to try to hide the rest of these from the other half.
Summary: it's rich chocolate - what else is there to say
