Advantages: Amazingly rich, luxurious ice cream
Disadvantages: expensive
Haagen Dazs is a 'super premium' ice cream, hailing from the United States. By super premium, I mean that it is highly dense, with barely any air mixed in during its creation, resulting in purer ice cream. There are also no emulsifiers or stabilisers in the product - the makers opt to use egg yolks and butter fat instead. The result of all this is a really, really thick ice cream, that takes forever to melt, and takes a real effort to get your spoon into it!
This is not a bad thing though, as when you do manage to get through it in its fully frozen state, you are rewarded with one of the richest taste experiences in ice cream that you are likely to find. The flavours are intense, and the ice cream is smooth and perfectly creamy. Unlike ice creams such as Walls, which is lighter and much more.... fluffy, Haagen Dazs is like velvet in your mouth. This thickness and density mean that even though the tubs are fairly small compared to the competition, it will take you forever to get through them!
Fortunately, this ends up being one of the brands saving graces, due to the high cost of the ice cream. I know there are usually offers on in the supermarket, but Haagen Dazs can be extremely expensive, with the large size tub costing well upward of £4. I've never bought the small tubs in the cinema, but I shudder to think how expensive they are.
The taste combinations of the vast directory of flavours make it all worthwhile though. You can get pretty much any kind of flavour, ranging from Bailey's Irish Cream, to Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, to Pistachio and Strawberry Cheesecake. Every now and then you get special limited edition varieties such as Sticky Toffee Pudding, but these can be quite hard to find.
The Strawberry Cheesecake variety tastes just like cheesecake. You even get chunks of soft, sweet biscuity cheesecake base scattered throughout the ice cream, which I tend to aim for! Then throughout the vanilla ice cream, which has a hint of the cheesecake flavour, you get vast swirls of strawberry sauce, which is so sweet and flavoursome it is amazing. The cheesecake variety is without a doubt my favourite - it is one of the tastiest ice creams you will ever have!
Summary: A luxury ice cream, that is thick and smooth, with great flavour
