Advantages: taste, price when on offer, packaging
Disadvantages: none for me!
The first good spell of sunny weather meant only one thing in our household: Ice Cream. Never ones to miss an opportunity Tesco have cleared a whole end-aisle freezer compartment and stuffed it full of choice picks and amongst them, on half-price offer are Haagen Daz.
For your money you can pick up a 500ml of Haagen Daz's Strawberry Cheesecake Ice cream for just £1.99 and this is what I will be reviewing here, other flavours are available in the ongoing (until 03/05/2010) offer include Baileys and Cookie Dough but as Strawberry is my favourite flavour this is what we picked up.
My tub is similar to the one pictured and I'm sure the majority of readers will be familiar with the colour and design of the packaging so no real need to describe, the one thing to point out though is that although dooyoo have listed the product as 'Strawberry Cheesecake' the actual picture above is for 'Strawberry Shortcake' I don't know if these are separately available products or if the product is the same but with a different name but do be aware that the tub does say "Strawberry Cheesecake"
That out of the way I can get down to the good part now; the taste. Removing the plastic top and peeling off the protective film the first thing I noticed was that the ice cream came all the way to the top of the tub. How annoying is it sometimes when you buy a product to find wasted space in packaging? Crisp manufacturers are particularly bad for this with half the bag being filled with air whilst a meagre amount of product sits uninspiringly at the bottom of the bag. Rest assured with Haagen Daz you get a completely full tub of ice cream and the handy tub is ready to be dug into with a spoon, or if you are more refined you can dispense some into a separate bowl. Being far from refined I grabbed my spoon and got stuck in.
The texture of the ice cream is smooth and creamy and my spoon slid through the ice cream with the minimal amount of effort, dotted around the white ice cream are chunks of cheesecake biscuit base and a swirl of red, strawberry sauce. The taste is sublime! the strawberry sauce is sweet and on the sticky side which blends perfectly with the ice cream itself and the biscuity texture of the cheesecake base gives a contrast to the smoothness of the cream and strawberry. Together the three main components work incredibly well and the only bad thing about this is the fact that once I start eating it I find it very hard to stop!. I'm not sure why it is called 'cheesecake' though as the only flavours I can detect personally are the strawberry and the biscuit base, the cheesecake itself isn't really evident but that it by no means a criticism - it is most certainly moreish and incredibly tempting though and this is by far my own personal favourite flavoured ice cream and makes for a decadent treat every now and then especially when the sun is shining outside.
I will assume that readers will know that ice cream isn't health food so the calorie and fat content shouldn't come to that much of a surprise when you discover that 100ml of Haagen Daz's Strawberry Cheesecake Ice cream will provide 234 calories and 13.4 grams of fat. Certainly not something to overindulge in if you are conscious about your calorie intake but when the mood takes you and only ice cream hits the spot you may as well eat a premium brand who's flavours are as close to authentic as you can get and who's taste is really second-to-none.
An ideal summertime/hot weather treat; Ice cream is a firm favourite in our household and whilst Tesco are running their half price offer it will be a purchase that we make on a regular basis so that we have a (un)healthy supply in our freezer. Highly recommended by me, Strawberry Cheesecake flavoured Haagen-Daz ice cream gets a perfect 5/5 dooyoo star rating.
