“ Brand: Heinz / Type: Puddings „
One of my favourite puddings is syrup or treacle sponge. However I never really have the time to make it from scratch, so I often try shop bought versions. Some are nice, some are really unpleasant. This tinned version from Heinz falls firmly into the 'nice' category!
This pudding comes in a purple tin with a picture of a yummy looking circular sponge on the front, covered in dripping syrup. The tin costs just 78 pence from Asda which I think is very good value.
The pudding can be cooked really easily, either on the hob or in the microwave. I chose to do it in the microwave and it takes just 1 and a half minutes to cook once it's been removed from the tin and put into a bowl. I think this is really convenient as you don't have to have it in the oven during your main course and estimate timings etc.
I found that once cooked, the pudding tasted lovely. The sponge was thick and moist and the treacle syrup covered it was very sweet and tasty. It is very viscous syrup so don't expect something thin and runny as you will be disappointed. I would have personally have liked a little bit more syrup but providing you have some custard with it, it is fine.
Of course it's not very good for you. One 75 gram serving contains 214 calories, 26.7 grams of sugar and 6.1 grams of fat. Those values actually don't sound too bad for a pudding but 75 grams is a very small serving. If servings are that size then you should be able to serve four people from this 300 gram tin, but I really think that is unlikely. We had the pudding between two of us, and it was just right. You could stretch it to three but I think four would be pushing it, so you have to take this into account when looking at the calories.
Despite the calories, though, I will definitely buy this again as it tastes lovely and is great value for money!
