Advantages: Low fat, weight watchers points on the packet, reasonable price

Disadvantages: Tastes vile and artificial

Having been on a bit of a diet kick lately, we bought these instead of ice-cream, Cadburys, cakes, the usual sweet treats. These mousses are a perfect size for the lunchbox, or a quick after dinner treat.

The lid states the mousse is made with real chocolate, which seemed a bit anti-diet but at only 85 calories per portion and 1.9g fat Marks & Spencer seemed to have discovered how to make chocolate healthy (okay healthy is a bit of a push, but anything that puts it back on my allowed list is good enough for me!). For those on weight watchers the mousse is labelled as being 1 ½ points.

The pot is a reasonable 70g, and at 39p each is very reasonably priced too. Each mousse is sold individually and comes in a mini bucket shaped pot, clear so you can see the dark brown mousse inside, with a white plastic lid on top. The lid is clearly marked as Marks & Spencer's Count on Us range, and has M & S's traffic light coloured triangles to advise of the fat and calories in the product. Reassuringly this is a green product. I think the packaging is simple and modern, while it does not make the mousse look luxurious it does appeal to the diet style of label and is easy to spot on the shelves.

However as soon as I tried this mousse I knew I would not be buying it again. It just tastes 'diet'. The consistency is dry and a bit gritty, and I don't know what kind of chocolate makes up that 6% but the mousse has a very artificial taste that lingers in the mouth most unpleasantly. The mousse was extremely light, like eating air, and I ended up mixing it up a bit so I actually got a proper mouthful. I hate wasting anything, so I mixed a load of blueberries into it and that made it more bearable.

Both my fiancée and I are big chocolate fans, but over a week later there are still 2 of these lurking in my fridge. When you'd rather go without than eat your 'treat', you know something is very wrong. We will be sticking to Cadbury's hilights mousse in future.

Summary: I buy my mousse for the taste, and sadly this one just doesn't measure up
