Muller Rice Apple
Advantages: Can often be found on offer, low fat & so very creamy!
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little high in sugar
When I'm in the mood for something, I simply must have it and these delicious pots of rice pudding are ideal for that creamy dessert/snack fix and often find themselves in my trolley during my food shop!
~ Price & Availability ~
Muller Rice apple (and other flavours) are available to buy in more or less any big supermarket. They are available to buy in a variety of flavours such as original, apple (the one I'm reviewing today), raspberry (my favourite!), banana & toffee, vanilla custard and strawberry. They can be bought as single pots or in multipacks of six. The price varies slightly depending on where you shop, they are around 60p for a single 190g pot or can be found on offer in Asda and Sainsbury's for any 6 for £3.00, or even better 10 for £3.00 at tesco's (exceptional value!) The multipacks of six are priced around £3.59 or can be found in most stores on offer at 2 for £5.00. You can also now buy 'mini' muller rice in raspberry and apple at around £1.50 for a multipack of four or 3 packs for £3.00. The beauty of these is that you can nearly always find them on offer!
~ Packaging ~
Muller rice multipacks come in a cardboard tray with six holes that hold your rice's nicely in place and are then wrapped in thin cellophane. Obviously the single pots don't come in a tray and aren't wrapped; they are nice simple plastic pots, different to the ones Dooyoo are showing though. The pots are now white, with a blue strip across the middle and a blue foil lid - nothing too special. Depending on which flavour you have there is a picture relating to that particular flavour on the lid, so in this instance there a lovely, juicy looking apple sitting on a bed of creamy rice pudding! On top of this there is a use buy date. The lid clearly tells me that this is a muller product with its eye catching red label. Around the pot there is a banner telling me this flavour is apple as well as various bits of nutritional information, storage advice and ingredients.
~ Taste test! ~
Frankly, I can never wait to dive into these pots of pure pleasure! Peeling back the lid there isn't really much of a smell, perhaps a slight hint of apple but nothing too present. I like to eat a little bit of the creamy rice on it's own first before I dive into the apple compote at the bottom of the pot so I get a full advantage of the flavours separate and together. The rice is utterly gorgeous! It's sooooooo creamy and mouth-wateringly tasty; for me it's definitely the best rice pudding out there. The apple at the bottom is equally nice with chunks of apple mixed into sort of an apple sauce, very tart and goes well with the rice pudding. There are so many different textures to this snack, smooth, chunky, creamy...HEAVEN! I think one 190g pot is definitely enough, they are quite large but I can easily demolish one for a snack or as a dessert. For the price they are a pretty decent size! Nicely filling without being too stodgy.
~ Other information ~
100g of this particular muller rice contains 108 calories (205 calories per 190g pot), which is pretty high but like I said they are filling and very tasty so totally worth it! The great thing about these is that they are LOW FAT! I hear all you ladies screaming out there! And maybe some men? They only contain 4.4g, which considering this is practically pure milk and cream that's pretty good eh? Each pot also contains 24.7g of sugar (eek :D not so good), but it is a dessert after all so there has to be some sort of shortfall.
This product is suitable for vegetarians and contains milk and eggs.
Muller rice can be eaten hot or cold
~ Overall verdict ~
I absolutely love these pots of rice, as you may have guessed by now. I would definitely recommend them to anybody who likes a good creamy, filling snack or dessert or is watching their fat intake.
I have also tried the raspberry flavour muller rice and It's my favourite one of the two but they are both divine so It's a good job they come in a multi-pack together so I don't have to choose! I've yet to try the other flavours but I strongly suggest you giving them a try particularly the toffee or custard one if you're not such a fan of fruit.
Summary: My favourite rice pudding by far! Heaven in a pot!
