Muller Rice Vanila Custard
Advantages: Strong vanilla flavour, creamy rice pudding as usual!
Disadvantages: fake custard :(
Golly gosh I'm on a review writing roll today! I think I'm getting addicted! Although I guess there's worse things to be addicted too these days, so I'm pretty safe :D This is my second review here for a Muller product. The first review I did was on apple flavoured muller rice and whilst shopping my favourite creamy treats were on offer so I popped a few flavours into my trolley including the vanilla custard which I had never tried before. Vanilla custard seemed a rather respectful choice to put with rice pudding in a pot and I thought it would make a nice change from the fruit ones.
Muller have been making dessert/snack type products since 1990 and provide us with a wide range of milky based such as Muller corner, Muller light, Muller rice, vitality, little stars and amore.
~ Price and availability ~
Muller Rice vanilla custard (and other flavours) are available to buy in more or less any big supermarket. They are available to buy in a variety of flavours such as original, apple (previously reviewed), raspberry (my favourite!), banana & toffee, vanilla custard (the one I'm reviewing today) and strawberry. They can be bought as single pots or in multipacks of six. The price varies slightly depending on where you shop, they are around 60p for a single 190g pot or can be found on offer in Asda and Sainsbury's for any 6 for £3.00, or even better 10 for £3.00 at tesco's (exceptional value!) The multipacks of six are priced around £3.59 or can be found in most stores on offer at 2 for £5.00. You can also now buy 'mini' muller rice in raspberry and apple at around £1.50 for a multipack of four or 3 packs for £3.00. The beauty of muller rice is that you can nearly always find them on offer!
~ Packaging ~
Muller rice multipacks come in a cardboard tray with six holes that hold your rice's nicely in place and are then wrapped in thin cellophane. Obviously the single pots don't come in a tray and aren't wrapped; they are nice simple plastic pots. The pots are white, with a blue strip across the middle and a blue foil lid - nothing too special. Depending on which flavour you have there is a picture relating to that particular flavour on the lid, so in this instance there a gorgeously smooth, yellow custard pool sitting on a bed of creamy rice pudding! On top of this there is a use buy date. The lid clearly tells me that this is a muller product with its eye catching red label. Around the pot there is a banner telling me this flavour is vanilla custard as well as various bits of nutritional information, storage advice and ingredients.
~ Taste test! ~
Now, I had high expectations for this rice pudding. I absolutely love all of the other flavours in the range so I didn't see why this one should be any different. Peeling back the foil lid everything seemed as it should, nice thick creamy delicious looking rice pudding. It didn't smell of anything, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but a hint of vanilla would have been nice. Tasting the rice on its own first as I always do with a new flavour was strange. For some reason it tasted different to the usual ones. It wasn't unpleasant just different. I think it may have been the vanilla as I think the rice pudding was slightly vanilla flavoured which again was by no means unpleasant I just didn't expect it. Otherwise the rice itself met my usual Muller rice expectations, very moreish and extremely rich and creamy. Now for the 'custard' part. My definition of real custard is thick, sweet creamy goodness - I love the stuff! Looking at this 'custard' it didn't exceed my definition. It was runny and seemed quite see through in colour almost like a jelly does. It definitely wasn't a creamy yellow colour. Tasting the 'custard' on its own, it didn't taste like the custard I like. It tasted more of just a vanilla sauce which is nice but it's not vanilla custard as the name suggests. Trying both the rice and the 'custard' together I found both flavours to go nicely together, the 'custard' sweetened the rice pudding up a notch and gave it a different texture - sort of smooth. Which makes me think vanilla flavoured rice pudding would work which is basically what this is, it isn't rice pudding with vanilla custard at the bottom. I found this rice pudding just as filling as the others and thought the size once again is perfect.
~ Other information ~
Muller rice vanilla custard contains 211 calories per 190g pot and 4.8g of fat. Like I mentioned in my other Muller rice review, Muller rice is labelled as a low fat food so for a creamy dessert this isn't so bad for you as some.
This muller product is suitable for vegetarians and contains eggs and milk.
~ Overall review ~
Didn't enjoy this Muller rice as much as the other flavours so I'm not sure if this one will end up in my trolley again. I'm not saying I disliked it - I will happily finish the other pots of rice in this flavour, I just felt a little disheartened that it wasn't proper custard at the bottom like the name suggested. I would recommend this flavour muller rice to anybody who is particularly a fan of vanilla as that flavour is definitely prominent in this dessert/snack but not to anybody who is a fan of the proper traditional creamy custard as you may be disappointed. Baring in mind I haven't tried this vanilla custard muller rice heated yet so I don't know what it would be like, perhaps the custard would thicken that way?
3/5 stars from me. The fake custard really let me down here muller.
Summary: Great for vanilla lovers, not so much for the custard fanatics.
