I was browsing around my local Sainsbury's today and I spotted these Nestle Toffee Crisp Ice Cream Bars for £1. I love my ice creams (see my profile pic for further proof!) and couldn't resist. I promptly threw them in my basket trying to summon up in my mind what a toffee crisp was like. I remember lots of crispiness and chewiness.
These ice creams are packaged in an orange cardboard box and within the box are four individually wrapped Toffee Crisp Bars. Each bar is 60ml and contains 165 calories, 10.1g of fat and 15.8g of sugar so these should definitely be enjoyed in moderation. Each ice cream is apparently 'crisp rice flavour ice cream, with a layer of soft toffee flavour sauce (14%) covered in milk chocolate flavoured coating (33%) and crispied cereal pieces (4%). This should give some indication of how the bar is broken down.
I bit in to my ice cream and some of the chocolate coating just broke away instantly (yet I didn't realise straight away that it was on my top and now I have chocolate all over me!). There were some small cereal pieces in the chocolate coating and these gave the ice cream bars a small crunch but no real bite or additional flavouring. The chocolate coating was average and had a bit of a cheap taste to it which I find quite often with Nestle chocolate really. Once through the coating there is a fairly rich tasting ice cream with what appears to be minimal toffee sauce (couldn't barely notice it). I found the whole bar to be a bit sickly and it was really not up to the standard that I expect being a fan of other Nestle products such as the Fab.
There really isn't much to like about this bar at all and now I have three more sitting in the freezer that I can't even get enthusiastic about eating. I was very disappointed with these bars and certainly won't be purchasing these again. I wouldn't really recommend them and I'm going to palm them off on the human dustbin that is my fiance. It's very unusual for me to turn down an ice cream bar but in this instance I will be!
1/5 from me and that's only because it's an ice cream and I can't rate lower than 1!
I could never be described as the world's biggest fan of ice cream so it was with an ounce of trepidation that I selected one of the "Toffee Crisp Ice Cream" bars from my freezer at the weekend, when I was looking for something tasty to eat whist enjoying the sunshine.
My other half had purchased the ice cream bars as a treat for me. Given that "Toffee Crisp" chocolate bars are one of my favourite snack items, he felt that the ice cream version would be a hit. I am a huge fan of the "Mars bar" ice cream snacks although I wouldn't necessarily enjoy eating a bowl of ice cream. I know - I'm being weird again! >:-o
The Toffee crisp bars cost my partner £1 for a box, although the price on the packaging clearly states "£1.50 Huge Value". A good bargain then! There are four ice cream bars in the box and my partner bought them from our local "Farmfoods" frozen food store. The box is orange in colour and each bar has a similar wrapper to the regular Toffee crisp chocolate bars, with the same distinctive colouring and writing.
Of course, as with all similar chocolate based ice cream products, this ice cream bar is not going to be a friend to those of you who are watching your figures! Each 60ml bar contains 165 calories and has 10.1g of fat within its chocolaty coldness. :-o
Upon unwrapping the ice cream bar I am aware of the most delicious sweet smell of chocolate which instantly gets those taste buds a-flowing! The appearance of the ice cream bar is similar to that of a chocolate Toffee Crisp bar in that the top of the chocolate has a completely different look than the rest of the chocolate on the bar - it has speckles of something in it! They are definitely not the 'crispies' that are on the regular toffee crisp bars, but are something equally as 'crackly'...
After biting into the bar, I am aware immediately that the manufacturers (Nestle) have done the unthinkable where I am concerned. They have made the chocolate ice cream within the Toffee Crisp ice cream far too rich... what a disappointment! This means that the snack is really quite sickly. Not one to be put off easily where chocolate snacks are concerned, I continue the munching process...
Oh yummy! Delicious caramel on top of the chocolate ice cream that is surrounded in gorgeous crispy chocolate, and topped off with those crackly crispy bits... nice! Oh wait though - is that all the caramel that's in there? Hmm... a bit stingy!
One of the things I really enjoy when eating a toffee crisp chocolate bar is the satisfying big bite one needs to employ when biting into it. This enjoyment is removed from the ice cream version because the bar is much smaller but also because the caramel/chew element to the chocolate bar is really not there with the ice cream bar. I can appreciate that this may have been difficult to acheive with an ice cream snack, but it is surely an important element to a 'Toffee Crisp' product?
Overall, I found this ice cream bar to be a HUGE disappointment - there was too much of a sickly taste from the chocolate ice cream which made the ice cream bar quite difficult to finish. (This is unheard of!) It is a bit of a shame really because regular Toffee Crisp bars are one of my all time favourite snacks!
I'd have trouble recommending these ice cream bars too highly - probably only one star. I definitely wouldn't buy them again - special offer or not!
A disappointing snack! :-(
