“ Brand: Onken / Type: Yoghurts „
I'm not a huge dessert eater but do like to have something sweet after my meal. I usually opt for the healthy option of fruit or yoghurt. One of the brands that regularly find its way into my trolley is Onken. I find that their yoghurts are not too sweet, taste great and are relatively healthy. I usually opt for one of the fruit yoghurt pots that contain bits, as I like the taste and texture of real fruit in my yoghurt. However on my recent trip to the supermarket I spotted their range of 'whole grain yoghurt'. Having read the product description I was intrigued so popped this into my trolley. At the time of purchase this cost £1.19 in Tesco.
There are several varieties of whole grain yoghurts made my Onken and the one that I went for was the summer berries variety. This comes in a 450g pot, which is purple in colour and has pictures of a variety of berries along with sheaves of wheat running along the top. The yoghurt itself contains live probiotic cultures, which are very good for your digestive system. In this case there are three types of bacteria; lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum and streptococcus thermophilus. The pot has a re-sealable lid and contains 3 servings.
This wholegrain pot of yoghurt contains five types of wholegrain; rye, wheat, oats, wheat bran and barley. It also contains four different types of berries; raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and elderberries. In addition linseed has also been added which is a useful source of essential fatty acids. That's a lot of stuff that's been crammed into one pot and with all that wholegrain it's sure to keep you regular too!
On opening the pot I was met with a purple coloured yoghurt in which I could see flecks of the skin of dark blue berries. I could also see chunks of wheat and barley along with small linseeds. The yoghurt smelt sweet and fruity and looked very appetising. I scooped a few spoons of this into a bowl and tucked in. The yoghurt tasted quite sweet and fruity. The flavour of the berries was lovely and tasted 'real' and not synthetic. It was also quite creamy, but at the same time fresh and light.
The addition of whole grains gave the yoghurt a whole new dimension. Each spoonful gave a slightly different taste and experience depending on which of the wholegrains were in it. The texture of the yoghurt was really interesting - the oats and wheat were really soft whilst the barley was quite fluffy, having soaked up some of the yoghurt. Finally the linseeds added a bit of crunch to the yoghurt. All in all I thought that the yoghurt was absolutely delicious!
The yoghurt contains cows milk and gluten so is not suitable for those with an intolerance to these ingredients. Each 150g serving contains 165 calories, 6.1g of protein, 4.3g of fat, 1.0g of fibre and 21% of an adults recommended daily amount of calcium. The yoghurt is also suitable for vegetarians.
Overall I thought the yoghurt tasted delicious and is something that will definitely be finding its way into my basket again. There are several other varieties of whole grain yoghurt which I am also keen to try. If you like fruity yoghurt with bits in it then I would definitely recommend you give this a go.
