Screwballs Ice Creams

Well I've been having problems lately - we've been having beautiful hot weather and I've needed something to treat my twin boys too to cool them off. They are just 19months old and become increasingly frustrated with tiptops and lollies as they just can't grasp the concept that ice lollies melt - this leads to tantrums and paddies which as you can imagine are the last thing I want on a boiling hot day lol.
They enjoy yoghurts though and ice cream they try feed themselves too so when I seen a box of screwballs in Iceland for a £1 I thought they'd be worth a try. They can melt to a yoghurts consistency if they preferred or they can start off hard the way ice cream does. They can also hold them in their upside down cone cups the way they would hold a yoghurt pot. Hopefully these were going to solve a few problems.
Now screwballs I have found have always been a five minute novelty icecream you can purchase off your local ice cream van when you were younger. The novelty soon wore off though the cone got thrown away and you wanted some good decent ice cream on a cone so I was glad that a box of 6 only cost a £1. The fun and childlike novelty is sort of shown on the box too, with a picture of two screwballs with colourful balls surrounding them.
These particular ice creams are raspberry ripple - ripples of raspberry flowing throughout a creamy, vanilla ice cream. They come in like I said their upside down cone shaped plastic tubs with a pull off cardboard lid. It has a little tab to be able to grab it and pull it off easily. At the bottom of each cone there is a ball of chewing gum - theres your screwball!
I wasn't expecting these to be of high quality being just Iceland's own but I was quite surprised. Don't get me wrong it wasn't fantastic ice cream and some stunning raspberry sauce drizzled throughout but I did find the ice cream creamy and tasty, and the raspberry syrup not only added colour to the ice cream but it actually tasted of raspberry too being sweet and fruity to offer some extra flavour.
You do need your own spoon for these - the smallest spoon you can find really to be able to reach he bottom of the cone and fetch your chewing gum.
As for the chewing gum at the bottom it is rock hard so try not to crack any teeth when biting into it. It is quite simply a ball of cheap chewing gum - it loses it's bubblegum flavour within seconds literally but that was to be expected. The icecream at the very bottom tends to mix up a little bit with the chewing gum too making it more sweet than usual and slightly changing it's colour.
In case you were wondering they did solve my melting ice lolly and tantrum performing twins problem - they ate them the way they would an ice cream and a yoghurt - enjoying them while they were actually ice cream and the melting of the ice cream didn't bother them as then it was just like eating a yoghurt! Finally a problem solved! When my boys do eat these mind you I do keep a watchful eye over them because of the chewing gum ball as I don't really want them swallowing one or choking - the chewing gum ball is small enough for any young child to choke on or swallow.
For just £1 you can't go wrong with these especially in the hot weather and if you have kids. The cone shaped cups make them all the more childlike and exciting and the icecream itself is quite tasty. I will definitely be buying them again!
