“ Brand: Swedish Glace / Type: Ice Cream „
Being lactose intolerant means that dairy products (including ice cream) are out of bounds (unless I want to feel ill!). However, Swedish Glace have a range of lactose-free frozen desserts that are right up my street! I have been buying Swedish Glace Smooth Vanilla frozen dessert for some time now after finding it in my local supermarket and it tastes delicious, in some ways even better than some dairy ice creams I've tried in the past (before being diagnosed). So when I saw Swedish Glace Neapolitan in my local health food shop, it went straight into my shopping basket! I loved Neapolitan ice cream when I was a kid, because you got some vanilla ice cream, some strawberry ice cream and some chocolate ice cream... Heaven in a tub!
Swedish Glace Neapolitan frozen dessert (to give it it's proper name) comes in a 1.3 litre (685g) black tub. Not only is it lactose-free, but it is also cholesterol-free and gluten-free, as well as being suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Also, it contains no genetically modified ingredients. So apart from its sugar content and (to a lesser degree) its salt content, this frozen dessert/ice cream isn't all that bad for you!
So, Swedish Glace Neapolitan frozen dessert is probably healthier for you than most ice creams, but the real test is does it taste good?
This frozen dessert has a smooth texture to it and so it slides down quite nicely. Flavour wise, all three flavours (vanilla, strawberry & chocolate) taste great. In fact, if I didn't already know that it was dairy-free, I wouldn't have guessed! It pretty much tastes the same as any normal dairy Neapolitan ice cream. Even the chocolate part of this Neapolitan frozen dessert tastes like normal chocolate ice cream and that in itself is pretty much a miracle! There isn't all that many, but a lot of non-dairy chocolate and chocolate frozen dessert/ice cream tastes quite bitter and is more of a dark chocolate than a milk chocolate, but here Swedish Glace have got a nice balance and it tastes great!
If you're lactose intolerance, gluten intolerant or maybe on a diet, than I would say this ice cream is for you. It tastes great and I don't have to worry about any side affects from eating it! I whole-heartedly recommend Swedish Glace Neapolitan frozen dessert, whether you're lactose or gluten intolerant, on a diet or just want a great ice cream!
Tesco currently sell Swedish Glace Neapolitan frozen dessert for £3, but I paid a bit more than that at my local health food shop (but it's well worth it!).
Ingredients: Water extract from premium graded soya beans, Sugar, Glucose, Vegetable oils non-hydrogenated, Emulsifiers: mono- and di-glycerides from vegetable oils, Stabilizers: carob bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan, Cocoa, Salt, Colour: red beet powder, Vanilla flavour, Strawberry flavour.
f you are a veggie, a vegan, have high cholesterol, are intolerant to gluten or lactose then I have found the perfect ice cream for you and if you are none of those things read on because this product is delicious!
I have been buying Swedish Glace for over 20 years and yes it is from Sweden so you can expect superb quality. In the early days they made a pear flavour which was pale apple green and tasted wonderful, but sadly despite many emails to them over the years they haven't made it anymore but it doesn't matter because what they do make is worth buying! In the days of the pear flavour the ice cream would only be found in the secret caverns of health food shops where only veggies would go, but now they are sitting in the freezer cabinets of major supermarkets saying "buy me!"
So picture yourself on a sunny day by the sea sitting outside a blue and white beach hut watching the waves gently lapping onto the soft icing sugar sand. Then imagine eating a cone of pink white and chocolate ice cream which tastes creamy and delicious and which is actually not bad for you! This is Swedish Glace and if you have never tried it I would urge you to seek it out!
It doesn't even need to be sunny because in our house it sits happily nestling close to a warm apple pie or a cherry crumble. It takes me back to the days when mum would send me to the corner shop to buy a brick of Neapolitan and I would carry it hope excitedly wrapped in newspaper. Then at teatime it would bask on my dish next to orange jelly with mandarin oranges floating inside like little fishes. Those simple days...........
The flavours of the ice cream are beautiful. The vanilla tastes like they have used a good vanilla extract and they say that it is made using real vanilla pods. The raspberry has lovely fruity flavours with a ripple effect and the chocolate is rich and delicious.
All Swedish Glace is made from pure soya beans and they do not use any hydrogenated fats.
The cost of the Neapolitan is £3.28 for 1.3 litres. There are also other products in the range including wild blueberry, raspberry and chocolate and plain vanilla as well as cones and lollies. The ice creams come in attractive octagonal containers and you can find them in health food stores and in major supermarkets. These are cheaper at about £2.46 for 750mls. The wild blueberry is really good and they use the blueberries they grow in northern Sweden for this.
Recently the company won an award for the chocolate flavour in the "Free from Awards" run by the only magazine in the UK for those on restricted diets.
You don't have to be on any special diet to really enjoy these ice creams. They really are lovely and I would recommend you to try them!
As some of you may know from my previous posts I have a friend who is allergic to milk, she's lactose intolerant.
What is lactose intolerance? Lactose Intolerance is basically when a person cannot digest the sugars in lactose. This is because their bodies don't create any lactase which breaks down the lactose. It is actually a very common problem and more people suffer from it than you probably realise it is thought that up to 15% of the U.K suffers. The symptoms can range from just getting a stomach ache or eczema after eating lactose right up to vomiting and getting diarrhoea.
Because of this there are loads of lovely foods that she can't unfortunatley eat. For example yoghurt, chocolate and icecream. So we went shopping together once to try and find some that she could eat. The only icecream we could find was this Swedish Glace brand.
It comes in a variety of flavours, the best of which are chcolate strawberry andf vanilla so when we came across this tub it was perfect. I tried it with her because we'd run out of other icecream and it was actually really nice. It tastes very nice and fruity (strawberry) and the other flavours are really nice too. The texture is really smooth and it has a perfect way of melting in your mouth.
My friend loves this stuff and I think it's great that a company has at last started to make dairy free icecream. i also eat it a lot now because its really tasty and is now one of my favourites. i really recommend you try it.
It can be quite expensive at anywhere from £2 - £3 for a tub but it's definately worth it!
