“ Brand: Tesco / Type: Ice Cream „
I really like Ben and Jerry's Phish Food Ice Cream, which is made from chocolate ice cream, chocolate fish shapes and marshmallow swirls. However it is stupidly expensive and costs £3.99 for a 500 ml tub. So when I saw Tesco were offering a similar looking ice cream, called Tesco Rocky Road Premium Ice Cream, for £3 per litre, I thought I would try it. After all, it was less than half the price, so if it tasted anywhere near as good as Ben and Jerry's then I would buy it in future. Unfortunately it did not taste anywhere near as good! Tesco Rocky Road Premium Ice Cream comes in a cylindrical tub like other premium ice cream brands Haagan Dazs and Ben and Jerry's. It is a brown tub with the name of the ice cream printed in the centre of a picture of a fluffy cream coloured marshmallow. It looks very inviting. The product is described as 'Chocolate and marshmallow flavour ice creams rippled with chocolate flavoured sauce, dark chocolate chunks and marshmallows'. What could be nicer than that? Sadly when I tasted the ice cream it was a bit of a let down. It didn't seem to have much flavour at all. The chocolate ice cream, sauce and chunks were not very chocolatey and they certainly didn't have that rich, dark, Belgian chocolate style taste that you get with the more expensive ice creams. The little marshmallows were OK and quite generously distributed throughout the ice cream but they didn't have much flavour either. The whole experience was quite bland and even after eating a lot of it I didn't feel like I'd consumed anything substantial. I could have eaten half the amount of a more expensive ice cream and felt like I'd had a lot more flavour and enjoyment, so even though this seems good value for money it isn't really. The nutritional values per 100 grams are as follows: 200 calories, 19.4 grams of sugar, 8.7 grams of fat and 5.7 grams of saturates. Considering that a portion of ice cream is likely to be more than 100 grams, these values seem quite high!
