Advantages: quick dessert, good price when on offer, tasty
Disadvantages: a tad too much vanilla
My husband loves ice-cream and will eat it no matter whether it is summer or winter so a couple of weeks ago when looking for some ice-cream on a trip to the supermarket I spotted Viennetta's on offer and thought it would make a change from the usual tub of ice cream. Viennetta now comes in different varieties but I opted for the Vanilla one as my husband can be funny with some flavours.
Viennetta is made by Walls and can be purchased in most supermarkets. I paid just £1.00 from Tesco for the 320g (650ml) vanilla viennetta which I though was excellent value as I can remember that my parents hardly ever brought these when I was a child as they were rather expensive.
The Viennetta is shaped in a oblong and comprises of vanilla ice cream which has layers of chocolate running through it.
The Viennetta comes packed in a cardboard box which has a picture of the Viennetta on the front and contains all the necessary information that you need to know on the back. Inside the box the Viennetta comes laid on a thin brown plastic tray wrapped in a white plastic wrapper. This keeps the Vienetta secure and in one piece.
As the viennetta is made predominantly of ice cream then you need to keep it in the freezer. There is no serving instructions on the box but I always take the Viennetta out of its box, remove the white plastic wrapper and allow it to stand for a couple of minutes on its tray before slicing and serving. I personally find this the best way as I like to eat ice cream just as it has started to give a little and become softer rather than as soon as you take it out of the freezer. It is quite easy to slice if you use a nice sharp knife, it seems to state on the box that a serving is a 100ml slice meaning you will get around 6 servings from one Viennetta. Personally myself and my husband are a little greedy and tend to have a couple of slices each per serving!
A single 100ml slice of viennetta contains the following nutritional information:
Calories - 120
Protein - 1.5g
Carbohydrate - 12g
Fat - 8g
Fibre - 0.5g
The Viennetta does look like quite a posh dessert when served in slices on a nice plate or dish with its contrasting layers of ice-cream and chocolate and the rippled ice cream on the sides of the bar. When eating the Viennetta I love to hear the crisp crunch of the thin chocolate layers breaking. The combination of the sweet cold vanilla ice cream and the ever so slightly bitter crisp dark chocolate offer a lovely contrast of flavours that complement each other very well. Personally I think the vanilla flavouring in the ice cream could be toned down a little as it is a little overpowering and makes the dessert a little overly sweet but is not a huge disadvantage and it is still a lovely dessert. Also as this is a frozen dessert it is one that you can keep tucked away in the freeze not having to worry about it going out of date so it makes a great rescue dessert if you have unexpected guests!
