Advantages: it is a nice ice cream

Disadvantages: expensive, too much unnecessary packaging, not enough brownie pieces!

Magnum Temptation Chocolate Ice Cream is the latest creation by Walls.

They describe it on their website as "rich milk chocolate ice cream enriched with sumptuous chocolate sauce and an abundance of white chocolate chunks and brownie pieces surrounded in a dark chocolate coating".

You may have seen the rubbish advert, which features the tag line "The Royal Treatment". They're pitching this new ice cream as something really special and as we all like Classic Magnums we decided to try these, as they were half price at Tesco.

I don't normally like to drone on about packaging in my reviews, but I just have to mention the ostentatious packaging of these new Magnums. You get 3 ice creams in a pack and each ice cream is individually packaged in a small box and these 3 boxes are wrapped in foil. To me this is a complete waste of packaging and I can only imagine that they did this to enforce the point of how incredibly indulgent they are.

Well I think they need to sack their packaging design team, as the concept they've produced is just ridiculous. The box is sealed with a sticker of a lock - ooo if only I had the key to unlock such a treasure! But wait, I've managed to open it and what pray tell lies within such a grand coffer? As I open the box I'm blinded by dazzling light! Is it diamonds? Alas no, it's just the inside of the box is coated in shiny material.

Well after all this fuss over the pretentious packaging, my taste buds are well and truly hyped up for a taste sensation! This is despite my initial disappointment over the size of the ice cream. Usually size doesn't matter, but this new Magnum was about half the size of the Classic. However, I was optimistic that quality would prevail over quantity and I took my first bite.

The first thing I noticed was the dark chocolate coating was a lot thinner than the coating of the Classic Magnum. Perhaps this is why the manufacturer felt the need to package them in individual boxes, as the ice cream wasn't given the usual protection of the lovely thick chocolate. But the coating did taste nice as I like dark chocolate and it wasn't bitter.

The next flavour to tantalise my tongue was the "rich milk chocolate ice cream enriched with sumptuous chocolate sauce". This too had a lovely flavour and it was rich and creamy, which is what I expect from Magnum ice creams. My next bite consisted of the brownie pieces and this was fabulous as it was all gooey and fudgy. Unfortunately, there weren't enough of the brownie pieces; I think I only had one piece at the top and one piece at the bottom of the whole ice cream. How disappointing.

At first I thought they'd also scrimped on the white chocolate chunks as I couldn't see any, but then my teeth crunched down on a chunk. However I couldn't actually taste the white chocolate because it seems that all the other dark and milk chocolate flavours overpowered the white chocolate, so the chunks were just annoying lumps in the ice cream. To improve the ice cream I say ditch the white chocolate and bump up the quantity of brownie!

The Magnum Temptation Chocolate was a total disappointment in every single aspect, so you can keep your pompous "Royal Treatment" and we'll be sticking to the Classics, thank you very much!

Each ice cream weighs 68g and contains 240 calories and 14g fat.

Usual price £3.49 - half price at only £1.74 at Tesco's until 5 May 2009.

Summary: I'd rather eat a tub of Ben & Jerrys for my ice cream brownie fix!
