AdelsbergNewest Review: ... short walk from the caves. The main square was blighted by road-works and a giant crane so it was difficult to get our bearings and find street names. We spotted the familiar blue "I" beside an office and went in to ask if they had any maps of the town. It turned out to be the offices of a political party and judging by the looks on the faces of the people working there our request was the first of its kind they had ever had. I resisted the temptation to drag them outside, point to the sign and ask why they would have it if there was no information to be had. Do you know where Benetke is? How about Celovec? The first is the Slovene name for Venice, the other the Slovene name for the Austrian town of Klagenfurt. In central and eastern Europe you will see signs not for Belgrade but for Beograd, while Istanbul is the Soviet-sounding Carigrad. Of course this can be a little confusing to Brits as the names of our cities are almost always referred to by speakers of other languages as their usual name (notable exceptions being Londres and Edimbourg). I had been meaning to ask Dooyoo to provide a title for the Slovene town of Postojna but when browsing I noticed it was already listed as its German name Adelsberg. This is only the ...
