A quaint little city with beautiful architecture. (Alesund)

Advantages: Lovely surroundings. Disadvantages: The outskirts are a little off putting on the journey in to the city. Unfortunately in our two week tour of Norway we were only able to spend a night in Alesund as we were travelling from Trondheim which took most of the day. Alesund was not particularly glamourous on the drive into the city in fact a little confusing at times. However when we arrived at our hotel in the centre at the harbourfront we were sorry we were staying only a short while. We were surrounded with beautiful art nouveau style architecture -spires turrets etc. For an even better view of Alesund from above you can climb the 418 steps to Fjellstua, a kind of viewing gallery. There is also a little train I think that takes you up as well if you don't fancy all those steps, however like all things in Norway you pay dear for it. At the top you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee. It is worth remembering however that if you arrive on a Sunday like we did, there are few restaurants open and most shops are shut for the day. All in all a lovely place to visit. Summary: Worth a visit if you can fit it in, |
