I recently returned from a 2 week holiday in Alghero with my girlfriend and her family. We stayed in a villa in the middle of the town and had a really great holiday. The advantages of alghero are that its basically an 'old town' with a beach, meaning that you get a good mix of both the shopping culture and an equally good beach tan! Its like 2 holidays rolled into one. It also has many great restaurants that we chose to eat out in most nights, and although they were fairly expensive, we thought that they still offered good value, as the food was freshly caught. Alghero known in Latin as Algarium, is on the West coast of Sardinia, in the province of Sassari. The name is derived from something, which might be off-putting, as it means "the place of algae"! However, I thought it was a lovely little town and enjoyed my brief stay there. Alghero, the tourism capital of northern Sardinia, is a fascinating town of immense historical interest, which also has excellent beaches.
