Advantages: Multi purpose holiday destination

Disadvantages: Siesta times and need of car

I recently returned from a 2 week holiday in Alghero with my girlfriend and her family. We stayed in a villa in the middle of the town and had a really great holiday.

The advantages of alghero are that its basically an 'old town' with a beach, meaning that you get a good mix of both the shopping culture and an equally good beach tan! Its like 2 holidays rolled into one. It also has many great restaurants that we chose to eat out in most nights, and although they were fairly expensive, we thought that they still offered good value, as the food was freshly caught. I dont mind paying top whack if your getting top whack produce.

The weather was consistently around the 35 degree mark which is hot by anybody's standards, and it was refreshing to see the entire town shut down between about 1 and 5 whilst people went on their siestas.

The town is extremely pretty, with boats moored in the harbour and the old brick of the castle walls still standing. It provides a very romantic location.

The only disadvantage is that we felt that a car was needed in order to explore the rest of the island. However, i think this is a disadvantage of many 2 week holidays; as after 10 days around the same time it is natural to want to flock to the next village and explore what their is going on there.

I would definately recommend a holiday to alghero, and with ryanair it is very easy to get a cheap flight out there. The city is fairly close to the airport (a taxi is about 20 euro), so it is very easy to do the trip yourself for a good price.
