Pablo_Sevilla Saravan: ... province is located in southern Lao sandwhiched between Sekong and Champasak provinces to the south and Savannakhet province to the north. It is somewhat off the tourist trail and is one the least visited regions in Lao. The infrastructure is poor and the roads are some of the worst in Lao the further north and east you go. But there are a couple of places that have been on the backpacker radar for years n...

Pablo_Sevilla Don Det (Laos)
... Det is a river island located in Southern Lao on the border with Cambodia. Don Det is actually just one island out of about 4000 on this part of the Mekong. At no other part of the Mekong does the river run so wide. Here it s a few kilometres from one side to the next. To get here from Pakse, the region capital, it takes about 3 hours by minibus, a little longer by local transport. Coming from Stung Treng in Cambodia takes about 2 hours by minibus or more once you take into account waiting times at immigration at the border where you can get visas for both countries on arrival. Any minibus or tuk tuk will drop you off at a small beach from which you have to get a l...

GillMN Bhaktapur, Nepal
... is a mediaeval city about 45 minutes by bus from Kathmandu, the Capital of Nepal. It was once the capital of Nepal during the Malla dynasty from the 12th to the 15th century. To me the city retains the feel and layout of those times. The city is unique and great pains have been taken to keep it so. It s name, translated from Sanskrit, means "City of Devotees." I have to say, I felt devoted to it as soon as I stepped off the bus! There is a complete ban in the centre on any traffic or ox carts, so I was not walking in fear of my life. Other places I had visited in Nepal had road rules that were a matter of conjecture and even pavements were no sanct...

Pablo_Sevilla Louang Namtha
... Nam Tha itself is just a provincial capital that lacks any sights and is fairly charcterless. There is a airfield out of town but it s not in use. However, this is the place to arrange treks in the surrounding area to hill tribes. Also it s the place to get a tuk tuk or minubus to Muang Sing (2 hours) further north. Muang sing is on the border with Burma and China and you can go on treks that go right upto the Burmese border. The treks around Luang Nam Tha province have a very good reputation for being eco-friendly and sustainable. They respect the hill tribes the trekking groups visit by asking for permission on a regular basis. The treks usually involve a fe...
