fwsoames Penrhyn Castle
... wife and myself are both members of the National Trust and paid a visit to Penrhyn Castle a few weeks ago. Firstly the place isnt a castle. It was built in the 1830s to satisfy the vanity of the first Lord Penrhyn, an attempt to give the fellow a veneer of respectability he did not deserve. This chap was a Liverpool merchant who built his fortune on the production of sugar in the West Indies. More accurately he built his fortune on slave labour. As you wander through the rather sombre mock Norman halls you cannot shake off this essential fact. Everything that you see was built on the backs of slave labour. The next owner of this pile, Lord Penrhyn, was a chip of ...

jillycat Penrhyn Castle
... our recent holiday to North Wales we visited several National Trust properties in the area. Penrhyn Castle was one of these and certainly one of the more spectacular of the National Trust properties we have visited. Where is it The property is located 1 mile east of Bangor, at Llandygai on A5122. Signposted from junction 11 of A55 and A5. We found the signposts very helpful and got us there without any problems. The property is also on a bus route and you would then have to walk up the drive to the property. We found the parking at the castle to be very good it is a short 5 minute walk from the car park to the castle but it is all up hill. In the car park there is ...

beckyX Arrowtown, New Zealand
... is a very small town of about 2000 people in South New Zealand about 21 miles from the much larger Queenstown. It used to be a mining town 150 years ago, but the gold ran out many years ago and now tourism is the new source of gold for the town. Unusually for this area (which is now mainly famous for much more modern extreme sports industry), the town has a historic feel to it, with some very picturesque buildings. When we passed through en route to Queenstown, we were amazed that such a small town could have such a large and varied shopping street. One shop in particular made the visit entirely worthwhile - a chocolatier called Patagonia Chocolates. They have...
