I wasn't particularly looking forward to visiting Bangkok as it was towards the end of our round the world trip and I was expecting it to be hard work. In truth, Bangkok is a very exciting, friendly and cheap place to visit.

If you like shopping, then there are lots of street stalls and markets. The famous Khao San Road has got to be visited. You can buy just about anything for hardly anything! We ended up buying two suitcases to fill up with presents for family! Its also good for booking day trips out. We booked a trip to the bridge on the river kwai which was brilliant. We also had a Thai massage on the street behind Khao San, which was amazing. I just regret not getting it done sooner as I would have had one everyday had I realized how good and cheap it was.

The Chatuchak weekend market is HUGE! There are lots of British people who come over to Bangkok for a week, just to go to Chatuchak and buy all their furniture etc for their house. The people in the market organize the shipment home as well.

Getting around is easy. There is a great train service but the Tuk Tuks are the general way that people get around. They are great fun but a little scary at times! We hired one all day and asked our driver to take us to some of the big Budda's.

The Grand Palace is well worth the visit and not far from Khao San Road. If you like gold then you'll love this place!

We went to see the famous Ping Pong girls in Patpong which is a short taxi drive from Khao San Road. Its worth going just to experience it, but I would recommend to choose which club you go into with care. Choose one that is on the same level as the street so you can walk in and out with ease. We chose one that was upstairs. It was free to get in but had to buy a beer for 300 baht (normal price was 80 baht). It was very seedy to be honest but the other bars/clubs were much better. The girls can do some weird things and that's all I'm going to say!

Summary: great base to visit the rest of a magnificent country
