Advantages: A great experience, the Grand Palace, Khao San Road

Disadvantages: More expensive than the rest of Thailand

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand is a place which you will either love or hate. Whilst travelling around Thailand for a few months last year, Bangkok was our first taste of Thailand. After doing much research on Thailand I was expecting the craziness which is Bangkok, so when we arrived I really appreciated the city. However, the same cannot be said for my partner who did not like how busy Bangkok was and he believes that Bangkok is not a true representation of what Thailand as a country has to offer. I do agree with this partly as Bangkok is very very busy and definitely crazy, but if you are expecting this before you go I believe that you will find Bangkok to be an amazing city.

A place I would recommend visiting whilst in Bangkok is the Grand Palace. The Grand Palace complex was established in 1782 and houses the royal residenceand throne halls, as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha (a very important place for the Buddhist religion). The buildings within the Grand Palace are amazing to look at and it is a very spiritual place. Make sure that you take your camera with you as the buildings really do make for a spectacular photo, however please ensure that you do not take your camera with you into the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, as pictures of the Buddha are strictly prohibited.

Whilst in Bangkok, it is worth a social visit to the Khao San Road (if you're not staying on the Khao San Road), it is very difficult to describe this area of Bangkok...but it is fair to say that it is like no experience I have had before or after visiting Khao San Road. For those who have been, they will understand what I mean :-)

If you are heading to Bangkok, if time permits try to get out of Bangkok to see other parts of Thailand. The majority of Thailand is nothing like Bangkok. If you only have a few days spare, head to a gorgeous little town called Khanchanaburi which is just an hours bus ride away from Bangkok and a totally different Thai experience. Have fun!

Summary: A crazy capital city which is well worth a visit.
