Perhaps not a city to stay in for a week or longer, rather a city to visit for a day or two, perhaps arriving on the teeny tiny railway that has breathtaking views on its route across the island from Ajaccio or Calvi. Essential highlights of Bastia are the old port (le vieux port), surounded by colourful, crumbling old buildings that give the place a unique feel. The Citadel is a short climb from the old port, and place Saint-Nicolas is a great place to lounge around and enjoy an ice-cream and coffee.... more |

Bastia is a place with a ferry port many tourists pass through at speed thanks to its reputation as a rather busy and unattractive city. This reputation is unjustified. While Bastia doesn't have the stunning scenery of the countryside of Corsica, it is a vibrant, upbeat city with a very Italian feel that gives a real insight into the inhabitants of this wonderful and mysterious isle. Simply wandering around the city centre is a fabulous experience, chic boutiques alongside relaxed cafes and restaurants, not to mention the beautiful boulangeries (bakeries) and other food stores (well, this is France!)
