Newest Review: ... of town and we tried to find the accommodation we'd picked out from our Lonely Planet. Batumi is a higgledy-piggledy mess of streets and most of the street signs are written in either Georgian script or Cyrillic letters - the Lonely Planet, alas, writes the addresses in Roman script so you have to translate from the Cyrillic (Georgian is virtually impossible to the casual visitor) and then find the street on your map. There is no tourist information centre and very few people speak English - unless a kindly student spots you and offers to help, you will take ten times longer to find anywhere than you estimate it will take. Batumi. Words can not accurately or sufficiently sum up the bizarre two days I spent here in May 2006. However, I always like to try… Batumi is situated on Georgia's Black Sea coast, in the province of Adjara; it's the end of the supply line that transports oil from Azerbaijan. From Batumi the oil goes off in massive tankers over to Eastern Europe or through the Black Sea and the Dardanelles into the Mediterranean. You would think, then, that Batumi might be a cosmopolitan and thriving city as ports often are.
