Advantages: Very impressive and well preserved temples and buildings. Great atmopshere.

Disadvantages: The occasional package tour can occasionally spoil the ambience...

Bhaktapur is a few miles outside of Kathmandu and is actually more like a suburb.

Bhaktapur is a very old city and all new building and road traffic is banned. So although there are a fair share of tourists wandering around the ancient temples, streets and alleyways it still retains a special ambience and an ancient atmosphere.

Many of the buildings are made of wood and the whole town looks as though it hasn't changed in a thousand years.

The locals are very friendly and younger people, often students, are always eager to practice there english with you whilst showing you around and explaining the temples.

There are actually places to stay in the budget/mid range category in Bhaktpur if you feel you can't remove yourself from it's alluring and ancient atmosphere and want to stay there over night. If you have the time i'd recommend a night there soaking up the atmosphere and wandering around the temples and streets to your heart's content.

Summary: Like steping 1000 years back in time...
