From the 1850's to WW1, there was an Industrial boom in Bialystok which saw the city become a major player in the textile industry and saw its population rise from 13,000 to 50,000 mostly with Jews. I have stayed in and visited Bialystok (known as the green lungs of Poland) numerous times, let alone passing through it god knows how many times. Bialystok is a town in the North East of Poland and has a population of about 295,000. Bialystok is these days "white slope" in English, although in Old Polish (Staropolski) it would be translated as "clean stream" and in Lithuanian it would be "white roof" (baltstoge). Make of that what you will, at least they all agree on white! The photo is no way a representative of Bialystok, it is a different town, either the old square in Warsaw or perhaps Zamosc.
