Advantages: Location, weather, entertainment
Disadvantages: Price
I just had to write about Biarritz, as I feel it is a hidden little gem located on the south west Alantic coast of France about 30 minutes from the border with Spain.
The closeness to Spain means you get all different nationalities and plenty of Parisiens flocking south for the summer. It is even a fond favourite with the royals- Queen Victoria. Biarritz offers the impressive Hotel du Palais, which was used for royal visitors and is way to far out of my price range. It also offers a decent number of hotels and appartments along the sea front at reasonable prices.
The weather is interchangable, the fact that it is on the Alantic coast makes it alot cooler than say St Tropez but still if you go at the right time of year it is just perfect with an average temperature of 27 degrees. When I was there this summer we had many days in the high 30s, it was glorious and to be honest I really could not have coped with much higher.
Biarritz is great for all ages. It has fabulous waves on the beach and they run a yearly surfing competition which people flock to from all over the World. They also had the biggest music festival on whilst I was there in the South of France. In the evening, there is plenty of entertainment with the fetes in local villages, which go on to the early hours. I have to sayI have seen some of the most hilarious but completely and utterly mad entertainment. If that isn't your thing, the coastline is to die for, and I definately recommend taking a walk along it, also Spain is fairly close and I definitely recommend Tapas in St Sebastian. For the teenagers or budding surfers, there are Summer surfing classes that have very reasonable rates or you could just relax on the beach.
Biarritz is easy to get to, many airports fly to there and it is about a 2 hour flight. I usually fly with Ryanair for £70 return, so a bargin. Unfortunately, the pound is not that strong against the euro, so it can be a little bit expensive, I suggest going over to Spain for shopping expeditions but there are many beautiful little boutiques. Definately worth a summer get away.
Summary: An alternative to the Med.

- 26/09/09 Sorry if the rating seems harsh but I didn't learn a lot about about what to do or see in Biarritz.
"It is even a fond favourite with the royals- Queen Victoria." - isn't Queen Victoria dead? |
