I studied, worked and lived in Budapest for more than 10 years. So I have some favourite places. I don't know everything about the city, but I have some useful hints before you go there. I wouldn't like to bore you with the history of the city, you can read it on Internet.
¤¤¤How to go there?¤¤¤
There are two Airports in Budapest, you can go by Easyjet, Wizzair, BA or Malev. If you arrive there it is worth going by Airport Minibus (there is an info service at the airport) or calling a taxi. I prefer Taxi2000 which is a reliable and one of the cheapest companies (tel:+3612000000) or Tele5 Taxi (+3615555555).

Well, I have friends to stay at, but you can find a lot of hotels on www.booking.com. This is my favourite site for booking accomodation abroad. I will write later a review on it if it is possible. The hotels at Buda are more expensive, it is worth finding one in Pest. The public transport is quite good if you don't want to push a buggy or you are not in wheelchairs. There are 3 metro lines and a lot of buses, trams, trolley buses. For information go to the www.bkv.hu site.

I don't recommend you the Hungarian goulash or however it is written. It is for tourists only. I have some favourite places I usually go and I recommend. The first one is Bock Bistro (www.bockbisztro.hu) it is not a cheap place but still affordable. They have mostly French cuisine, fresh gourmet dishes. I like also Pomo d'Oro (www.pomodorobudapest.com) which is a real Italian restaurant int he heart of the city as well. And the third one is Café Kor (www.cafekor.com) in the heart of the city too. I worked there, that's why I know a lot of places there.
There are McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Subway restaurant sas well - if you don't want to eat anything new.

I like to walk on Margaret Island, the banks of the Danube and Vajdahunyad Castle. Margaret Island is 2.5 km long and 500 m wide. It is a huge park in the heart of the city. The bridges over the Danube are lighted beautifully and the Castle of Buda is fabulous. I recommend the Pest side of the Danube because the panorama is better. Vajdahunyad Castle was built in the end of the 19th century Its various parts demonstrate the different styles of Hungarian architecture. Its name comes from the wing facing the lake, which is an imitation of the Castle of Vajdahunyad in Transylvania. It has a Gothic gate that leads to the courtyard. On the left there are Romanesque buildings. Here you can find a short description of other famous places as well: www.budapest-hotel-guide.hu/en/budapest-informatio n/attractions-budapest.php
¤¤¤Summary¤¤¤
Budapest is a wonderful city you should visit. You should spend there at least 3 days to discover the city in each part of the day. I recommend also to go on a guided tour by bus, as the city is quite big. You can get down the bus at each station and look around, then jump on the next bus.
Summary: A city that is worth seeing

- 02/09/09 Sounds like an amazing place to visit. If I visit another country, there's no way I'd try fast food like McDonald's. I mean, you'll enjoy the trip much more if you immerse yourself into the culture there and try new things. Makes it worth it and you'd have much better memories. Great review! |

- 15/08/09 Lovely city, and a good knowledgeable review. I haven't been for about a dozen years and you remind me that I really should go back. |
