Advantages: More family orientated - and not too far away from Alcudia for those wanting to explore other resort
Disadvantages: Becoming more and more popular with Germans, and have an array of German Bars & Restaurants
C'an Picafort lies in the north east of Majorca/Mallorca and is the eastern end the Bay of Alcudia.
Transfer time to C'an Picafort is approx 1.5 hours - but is a pretty muich straightforward route and once off the motorway you'll pass a few little villages to have a nosy at!
The area that C'an Picafort is apart of is called Santa Margalida - and the town of Santa Margalida itself lies approx 10km inland - and you will usually pass through this on your transfer to the hotel.
C'an Picafort has a very German dominated bars & restaurants targetting the German tourists - and although the british tourists are never turned away, sometimes it can be uncomfortable in such a german influenced place.
The promenade is traffic free and very pedestrianised - with some lovely open front bars & restaurants lining the walk leading to marina & fishing harbour.
The more modern area is called Son Baulo - and is approx 2 km away from the resort to the east.
The best beaches in the area are actually in Son Baulo - and there is also a protected nature reserve too. Although very nice - please be aware there is a large pool with stagnant water and is home to less protected species.
The beach is very clean and the does have some good facilties - although they do charge approx 10 euros per sunbed and umbrella per day.... and most of them are broken too! So if you dont want to part with your money, take your towel and sit on the sand instead.
There are regular buses that run through the resort of C'an picafort and for approx 1 euro you can venture into Alcudia and surrounding resorts - which is a must, Alcudia is a very family focused resort and is ideal for those with children.
Something to check out also if your into this kind of thing is - Castle of Evil Count - it is one of the major tourist attractions on the island and has a fascinating story behind it and the castle has actually been there since the 1600's.
Also a 20 minute walk from Son Baoulo is ' Cemetery of the Phoenicians' - its a prehistoric iron age buriel ground - with over a thousand underground buriel chambers. There are plenty of historical sites of interest in this area if you enjoy this kind of sight seeing.
Nearby, is a giant wooden maze - which is a definate must! - Its about the size of a football pitch and will keep you entertained for hours. Its a labyrinth which you have to collect things along the way - there is a sprinkler system too - which you can guarantee to get hit by and soaked through but its fantastic for a cool down from the hot sun. In the evening the staff make it a little more exciting by chasing you dressed as monsters - great for older children and adults - but not so good for the little ones!
Also in resort is a karting track for older children and adults - and there is free transport from the hotels to the track.
If I think of anything else, I will besure to update my review....
Summary: Nice resort for those wanting a lazy day by the beach with the family and drinks at night

- 09/02/09 Sounds ghastly! I don't know why some people go on holiday if they want everything to be British-like around them. Just a friendly tip, if you were to use paragraph spacings in your reviews, it would make them easier on the eye and you might get more people reading them too. |
