The end of the First World War saw the collapse of Austria-Hungary and in 1918, Celje became part of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia). Celje was occupied by the Germans during the Second World War and the city and its people suffered terribly. Slovenes regard Celje (pronounced "sell-yeh") as their country's third largest city even if people from outside Slovenia might see it more as a large provincial town. Certainly if attitudes and erratic opening hours are anything to go by then "city" is perhaps pushing the boundaries. Maybe you think you've never heard of Celje - possibly you haven't, but if you follow football it may jog your memory to know that the Slovenian national team now play their matches at a brand new stadium on the outskirts of the city and have played host to both England and Scotland in recent years.
