The main sight seeing attractions around Chengdu include the China's biggest Panda Sanctuary which is about a 40 minute bus ride from the city-centre. Another attraction is the Leshan Giant Buddha one of, if not, the largest Buddha statue/s in the world and part of a wider UNESCO World Heritage Site located 180km south of Chengdu. This requires a full day to travel there sight see and return to Chengdu. The city centre itself is a mixture of cultures, there are traditional parks with beautiful gardens, traditional architecture, people practicing Tai Chi. Chengdu is a large Chinese city of well over 10 million people. It is located in Sichuan Province and although near the South Western border it is very much a central location. Chengdu is also a transit hub for Tibet with return flights leaving from Chengdu airport everyday, however these flights are disproportionately expensive compared with all other internal Chinese flights. Due to Chengdu's proximity to Tibet it has a large Tibetan Quarter in the City. This is a colourful area full of shops selling traditional Tibetan goods.
