Costa Brava (Spain)
Advantages: A wonderful spanish experiance
Disadvantages: cannot spend more time there
Our holiday is fast approaching and again this year we are heading to the wonderful Costa Brava area basing our selves at the castile Montrgi campsite (see separate review).
Although we are off for a relaxing time and our main aim is to relax and spend hours swimming this isn't possible for 12 hours and so we also like to explore the area:
The Costa Brava officially stretches from Blanes to the French border and the reason it is so popular is that as well as over 100 beaches the area has an average of 300 days sunshine a year almost the exact opposite here!
What to do:
This should almost be what not to do as there is so much to do in the area and really will depend somewhat on age.
We enjoyed a visit to Girona which is a beautiful city the old quarter is magnificent perhaps set off more by the new element giving such a great contrast the cathedral is awe inspiring and quite a climb, its vast gothic knave is the oldest in the world. We will be visiting again to explore in more detail the Jewish quarter and to walk passeig arqueol'ogic which is a path created on top of the walls that circle the old town. There are also various museums within Girona including the Jewish museum and art gallery. As we are travelling with small children we had to pick and choose what to explore.
Last year we also went on a glass bottomed boat around the illes medes and saw vast amounts of fish again something that is on our list for this year and I am snorkelling this time as you can get trips that allow both ideal for parents to take it in turns to mind the children and although not a cheap activity defiantly one we
Castell de Montgri
High above the campsite is the castle which is a 6 mile 3 hour walk and last year was considered too much for the children this year it is top of the list as the views from the campsite are stupendous the views from the top must be unbelievable the type of view that makes you wish you were Dali!
One of the most famous residents is Salvador Dali and you can visit his house however this is something we will do when the girls are older and can appreciate it but my Brother-in-law has been and recommends it you can also visit castell Gala Dali which is the castle Salvador Dali bought for his wife.
Of course a trip to the Costa Brava would not be complete without a trip to the sea and the Cap de Begur is the Costa Brava's St Tropez yet still retains its charm.
We are looking forward to exploring Empuries which is the oldest Greco-Roman settlement in Spain here you can see a statue of Asclepius the god of medicine which is one of the finest classical artworks in Spain.
Basically whatever you enjoy unless its wet and cold weather you can find it here.
This is a really small taste of what there is in the Costa Brava but maybe my favourite.
Should you wish to dine on full English and burgers then this isn't a problem.
However look at for the menu del dia which is the menu of the day and will be fixed dishes for a fixed price this normally represents fantastic value our favourite restaurant offered a choice of three starters, mains and followed by the best crème catalane all washed down with wine for 13 euro.
Tapa's also feature heavily in the cusine this are small plates of food normally one or two are ordered per person it is more of a snack or a lunch.
Fish and Seafood are plentiful in this area and as fresh as it is possible to be.
I love what I have seen of the Costa Brava so far and I am looking forward to discovering more it is an area that is heavy with tourism but equally it has still retained its Spanish feel and culture get yourself a good map and immerse yourself in the Costa Brava experience and like us I bet you will be counting the days until you can explore some more.
Summary: A place that is heavenly a wonderful mix of culture and gastronomy delight
