Advantages: Lots of good food!

Disadvantages: Quite rainy

Curepipe is yet another small town found in the centre of Mauritius, within the boundaries of the district of Plaines Wilhems. Like I mentioned in my review on Quatres-Bornes, Mauritius is divided into districts and each district contain several towns and villages. Like Quatres-Bornes Curepipe can be considered as being among the main towns of Mauritius. It hosts not only the best shopping places, but many important offices and administrative buildings of Mauritius are found other there. Curepipe is mainly known for its British-like climate: crisp cool air and rainy weather half the time! In fact, we went to Curepipe twice or thrice during my stay in Mauritius and it was constantly raining! So if ever you do visit this place, make sure to stock up on raincoats and umbrellas, even if it is in the middle of summer! Curepipe is more of a residential area with old colonial houses and fantastic yards, but nonetheless, there are some interesting places to see:

Places to see:

Xindix Night Club
This is an extremely popular nightclub among the locals. Since I exerted myself so much during the day, I was too tired by the evening to really enjoy Mauritian nightlife. But we were lucky enough to go to this nightclub one night and I loved it. For starters, access was free for couples and ladies, so the night was starting really well! The day we went was a special Bollywood night; meaning the dress code and party theme were Indian. The décor was just spectacular: Indian silk saris were strewn and hung all over the place, giving a very exotic touch to the atmosphere. One thing that I can say is that this particular night club is very posh and distinguished, certainly not the kind of place where you will meet drunks and/or perverts. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic exotic local cocktails were being served for free. In addition, the music was outstanding! There was a DJ who kept mixing local Sega (Mauritian folkloric music) to Bollywood songs. I would certainly give the highest rating to this fantastic nightclub!

Le Manhattan
It is quite an old and rather boring shopping mall, but due to its central location in the town, Le Manhattan is quite frequented by locals and tourists alike. The Mall holds the following: Pizza Hut, a chemist shop, a cyber café, a couple of restaurants, bowling and game arcades and the rest are all ready-made garment shops. It was an okay trip to this mall, but there was nothing which particularly attracted me to it, except maybe the small bookshop which is found just at the beginning of the mall.

Cuisine
From what my local friends told me, Curepipe is more reputed for its variety of cuisines and restaurants. We went to a nice Chinese place which was not only stunning in its décor but the food was marvellous, and at a very cheap price. Moreover, another distinctive trademark of Curepipe is the food vendors that are found in ever corner of the streets. The bright side is that the food hawkers are extremely hygienic- cap, gloves, and clean environment. We stumbled upon a vendor and he was selling a typical Mauritian food called "Rotee and Curry". It was merely a small unleavened bread with curry and chili sauce. It was absolutely delicious! The price for this amazing delicacy was a mere fifteen pence, courtesy of buying off street vendors!

Overall, it was a nice, albeit rainy place to visit and even if we did not really splurge in shopping at Curepipe, we most certainly filled our stomachs up!

Thanks for reading!

Summary: There was no shopping but the food was wonderful!
