The Northern Territory is a huge area of 1.35 million square kilometres with a population of only 209,000 and Darwin is the Capital city situated in the far north of this territory. Well I never expected to stay in Darwin for long, only planned on a couple of days inbetween visiting Kakadu and Litchhfield, however i ended up spending about three weeks here, i just loved it! The first thing you will notice is the extreme heat and humidity. I was there during their 'winter' in July, and it was about 30 degrees at about 10 in the morning, it was unbelievable. You even saw adverts for roast dinners in supermarkets for 'winter food'! that just made me laugh. After you get over the initial heat factor, you will be able to appreciate it a bit more. The flight from Sydney to Darwin takes about 4 hours (as far as I can remember). You can fly with a number of airlines including Qantas and Ansett (although someone recently mentioned to me that Ansett have recently gone bankrupt). Our flight was good, and the first thing that struck us when we landed in Darwin at around midnight, one night in June, was the intense heat and the smell. As the plane doors opened there was a rush of warm, humid air, which made it slightly difficult for me to breathe.
