Newest Review: ... in deadwood while the stone for the building itself came from Hot Springs some distance away. We then walked back towards the main street passing a marker showing what the street looked like in its early days then we turned and headed for one of Deadwood's most famous hotels. The Silverado Franklin hotel is an imposing building completed in 1933 but was updated and expanded in 1995. Rooms here are pretty pricey and some very famous people have stayed here including President Teddy Roosevelt, William Taft, Babe Ruth and John Wayne as well as the production crew of the series 'Deadwood'. eadwood, South Dakota We spent a couple of nights in Spearfish which was not too far from Deadwood where we spent part of one day exploring. This famous town grew rapidly in the 1880s as the western states became the place to go to make your fortune. Gold had been found in the nearby Black Hills and so this attracted the outlaws, gamblers and those free with their use of guns. The clientele ranged from drovers, Chinese labouers, rock miners, gold prospectors, cavalrymen, merchants, madams, gamblers and cowboys so it was a rare old mix of people back in the day.
