Advantages: Gives you a chance of finding a place on the cheap trains heading south

Disadvantages: Nothing going on there and everyone knows it!

Note the photo above is not Gdynia!

When it comes to Trojmiasto, Gdansk is the historical center, Sopot is the relaxation capital and Gdynia is little more than a transport hub. Gdynia is not aesthetic on the eye, it's almost if not larger than Gdansk and unattractive with plenty of communist blocks and little in the way of attractions.

Due to the popularity of Sunday trains heading south, it's an idea to catch them in Gdynia to give yourself a small chance of getting a seat - that though is about the only reason to go there, unless you are changing train or heading to the Hel Peninsula. The train station is typical of Poland, a dirty grey building with a small waiting room and lots of small snack bars and cheap grubby pubs.

There's really nothing to do in Gdynia other than head for Kamienna Gora (Stone Mountain) and admire the views over the city and harbour, accommodation choices are quite good but prices don't differ a great deal from lively Sopot or interesting Gdansk and the only chance you'll likely be staying there is during the Heineken Open'er Festival, Poland's biggest international music festival or if you have an early morning ferry to Sweden or Finland.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend a visit to Gdynia, it's a new port city that was a mere fishing village until the 1920s and 30s and therefore has nothing of historical interest and wasn't built at an architecturally pleasing time. It's got little going for it, in the way of nightlife and just about everyone heads to it's southerly neighbours Gdansk and Sopot instead.

Summary: Not really worth the wander
