Advantages: Overall a very beautiful town in a great region

Disadvantages: Quarry and nuclear plant a bit ugly

Givet is about the nicest welcome to France that you could have, arriving on a scenic road from Hastiere and Dinant in Belgium, you pass the border sign - the only signal that you are in France. Givet is quiet but seems a very happy place, I was passing through during the summer and thought it was remarkably beautiful as was the nearby region.

Givet is located in the Ardennes and the town keeps close to the wide and slow flowing River Meuse. On the opposite side of the river is a mixture of forest and fields, it's extremely green and combined with the colours of the river and the white and pink housing of Givet it makes it all look very vibrant. There's a nuclear plant and also a quarry on the outskirts, so this kind of takes away some of the charm but it's not as noticeable as it sounds!

Standing over the small town is the fort of Charlemont built by Charles V in the 1540s which overlooks the town, later in the 17th century the largest barracks in France at the time were added to the fort, today it still looks rather powerful even if its glory days were many years ago.

There's not a lot to do in Givet but it's a nice place to go for a walk or picnic and as it's one of the bigger towns in the valley, it may be a good place to look for accomodation.
